I am a police officer, my doctor told me she is sure I have lupus.  I have not seen my specialist yet to confrim but she is positive.  I have not been able to work my full 12 hour shifts because of being so tried.  Also I have had to leave early because of server headaces.  No one can tell how long these flares last.  I'm just wondering if I will be able to return to work my doctor has written me out for now.  I want to work but it is not just me out there I don't want anyone getting hurt because I have a flare up and can't pull my weight.

I'm sorry you've learned that you have lupus. Lots of people with lupus are able to work....some are not. It depends on the severity of your disease. And flares are so individual as well. I had a flare that lasted for 3 years and since I've only had small intermittent flares.

But I am glad you found us and hope you'll join in. You can get so much support and (sometimes) good information here. I'm afraid I'm not much help today.

I just want to know how do they know without bloodwork do they know or even suspect LUpus. My rhuemy thinks i do too. She said i show signs of Lupus besides RA and Fibromyalgia. I was not wanting to know at the time, I was just hoping it was a dream or something. shocked

Or if anyone out there could explain to me what their docs have told them. This is before bloodwork. My ana was positive. But i gather that can be that way for RA. Right?

Any comments would be acceptable. sad confused Laura

See the 11 major symptoms of lupus from the www.lupus.org website. These are used as much or more than blood work in diagnosing lupus - that is probably what your doctor(s) are going by.

Hi I am a nurse, who was diagnosed in 97,and i sometimes work 12s but for the most part i work 8,s five days a week and the three 12,s for some reason drain me.yes u can work and have a normal life for the upmost but that also entails u having a great doc, who knows what they are doing. I use to have migrains so bad thought my head would explode but over the years they gotten better. Have u had a cat scan done you want to rule out anything else as well though.Im sure i wasn't much help this is my first day on here. I also have been diagnosed with rheumatoid,and sjrogens.

Hi horsewrangler, I had the worst flare of my life back in Jan - Feb. I had severe headaches, at least 4 days a week then turned in to every single day for 1 1/2 week. I've always suffered with headaches but nothing like this! I ended up in the ER, had a CT scan which was clear, got a shot which only helped for a couple of hours and the headache came back. I got an appt with a neuro which said it was tension/migraine combined, my dx was it was caused by lupus! My rheumy put me on 10 days of Pred, it helped when nothing else would, things that normally would help (i.e. pain pills, excedrin migraine, etc) didn't touch this one!

I work 35 hours a week recently up from 32. Sometimes it kicks my butt like this week but it's also important that you get on a good treatment plan. I have to say I do feel better than I did before I was dx. Over the last couple of years we've had to increase meds, add some etc but I do feel better. It's important with lupus to pace yourself, listen to your body and rest when needed.
