Stomach ulcer

So a couple weeks ago I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer (related to taking a ton of ibuprofen, prednisone, and lots of stress).... I have been taking prescription omeprazole ever since and have been almost symptom-free since, but now I have started back on prednisone at a higher dose (40mg) and my ulcer symptoms are back.

I am in a flare, have a nasty viral flu-like illness, and now my ulcer is making me even more miserable! :( Wahhhh, I know. But I can't eat because of the stomach pain and nausea, and not eating means not taking pain medications (can't take them on an empty stomach or I get nauseous).

What to do??? I am at the end of my rope, I know it could be much worse but this is awful. I almost want to just go to the ER and say "fix me"! If only that would work...

Hi Kathryn, I am sorry that you are having such a hard & painful time. I wish I could help, I am in a flare as well. Doctors have put me on 60 mg of prednisone. YUCK! So I do have a question, when you were diagnosed with these ulcers did your doctors prescribe you an daily meds besides the omeprazole? Or when your in a flare do they tell you to try or give you something different? well I hope your doctors can give you something that will help or recommend something.

Oh also my hubby was diagnosed with ulcertive colitis and when he was in a bad flare he only was able to eat yogurt shakes.. and that some what helped.

I went back to the doctor and they did give me some more medication - still taking the omeprazole - she gave me Carafate, a liquid that I take four times a day (before meals and before bed), that helps a lot. She gave me Zofran as well, which was a lifesaver because it meant I could eat again! I've been drinking lots of milkshakes and yogurt. I can still feel that gnawing pain but at least the vomiting has stopped and I can eat again! :)

I am so sorry that your stomach is bothering you!  I found that Slippery Elm lozenges (several before each meal) and DGL chewables (Licorice that doesn't bother blood pressure) one before each meal worked better than anything pharmacutical.  My ulcer was so bad that I doubled over after eating anything.  I lost weight because I couldn't stand the idea of hurting that much just to eat.  But of course we have meds to take and need food to do that. 

Please be encouraged...it only took me 3 weeks of following the herbal supplements to see great improvement.  It has given me 90% pain reduction in my stomach!  I hope you find some relief soon.  Be blessed...
