 Hello,

 

I am new to the site anf forum. I was recently diagnosed with MS,relapsing/remitting. Dx. with lupus 10 years ago. While speaking with a friend, he stated," from his understanding, one could not have both MS and Lupus." Anyone have an answer??

Hi missgrace,

 

Welcome to the forum.  I'm so sorry you have both of these diseases to cope with.  One is enough!!  But yes, you can have both diseases.  Absolutely.  I was just tested for MS but came back negative.  When we have one autoimmune disease, it's more likely for us to get others.  Our immune systems are primed so-to-speak. 

 

The MS forum here is very active.  I hope you find support from us all!

MS is autoimmune as well.  So it will have a positive ANA result too.  The only way to know for sure if it's MS or Lupus, is to have a spinal tap and an MRI of the spinal cord (to see if there are lesions).  An MRI would be done first.  If there are no lesions, a spinal tap is not usually performed and a diagnosis of MS is negative.  I hope you don't have MS as well.  It sucks that both diseases mimick each other so dramatically.

Missgrace -Hi I have both MS,SLE and APS. I was just diagnosed with SLE and APS . I've been told that I've probably have had MS since I was in my teen . Like you I was told by someone that it was impossible so I questioned my diagnoses . Made my doctor repeat the tests and sure enough it was positive . My doctor say the in these case usually one of the deceases is a milder form . I was told the I have a mild form of lupus . Although I can't tell the difference between the two diseases. Expect for the extreme numbness with the MS . Since lupus is genetic and it runs in my family there was always a chance of me getting it. But getting the MS was a huge surprise. Although I'd rather have MS over lupus any day . Lupus is the one the scares me the most.
From what I've been told getting MS and Lupus together is not common but happens once in a blue moon.

Hi! Missgrace,

When I was first diagnosed, I was sent to a neurologist affiliated with our nearby big teaching university hospital. One of my first symptoms was frequent falling. He suggested further testing down the road because he remarked that it can happen rarely, tho, where a pt. can have uncharacteristic, I think he explained non-plaque if I remember correctly, MS on top of lupus.
