Rheoumys & deginerative nerves?

  I'm going to start off by saying that all this Rheumy business is new to me so any advice is well appreciated!

  I'm needing a major operation on my feet but before my Orthopedic will touch me he said he needed to know why I have nerve damage in my feet. I had gone to the Neurologist since the first of last summer to find out that I definitely have nerve damage but there was nothing he could do for me. He said that I needed to go to a Rheumy. He explained something about how blood vessels effect the nerves and he said that he believed that I have connective tissue disorder.

  I had my visit with the Rheumy and he put me on a weird dose of Prednisone "which I don't think is worth the sides". Anyway I called back and talked to the nurse asked him about talking to the Rheumy about my nerves in my feet and moving forward or not on this operation. The nurse came back rude and stated Rheumy  have nothing to do with the nervous system. I told him what the Neuro said and just repeated it over again.

  I'm motivated to find a different Rheumy and also have an appt. with my PCP next Mon. to discuss all of this.

  Am I missing something or am I being jerked around?  Thanks for reading!

Your neurologist wanted him to check you out for mixed connective tissue disorder. The Rheumy probably has tested you and decided to give you predisone to cut down on the inflammation. The nurse probably misunderstood what you were wanting to know. This can happen a lot. Ask the rheumy what is it you have exactly and then have him send the diagnosis to the Neuro. The neuro will be able to tell if you can have the surgery or not.

I would talk to the rheumy - perhaps his nurse was not truly representing him that day. If the rheumy him/her self doesn't make more sense, you may need to move on. The neurologist/rheumotologist/orthopedist need to be able to communicate and work together as a team. If they can't do that, them one or more of the players needs to be replaced.

Just my 2 cents.

  Both of you made good points Joy and Lynwood. I had talked to the nurse twice and explained what the Neuro  sent me there for and the nurse basically gave me a short lesson about how there is NOTHING that a Rheumy has to do with nerve issues. I tried my best to explain to him that was the reason I was sent there by the Neuro and he basically said "that's not in the charts!" Oh well, I'm going to see my PCP Mon. to see if he/team can get me on track for the surgery. I have great confidence in him and have known him my whole life.

  Also I don't want to call my Neuro's office because he basically told me he was handing me over to the Rheumy and they screwed up the paper work for my ins. and they know that but they try to get me to call and try to get copies, back referrals etc.
