protein in urine

Last month I posted a question about high creatine low Bun level. My pcp sent me to a kidney specialist

who ordered a ultra sound of the kidneys. He changed my blood pressure medicine took me off all

diuretics and ordered a 24 hour urine . Then he went on vacation. I got the results back on the 24 urine

today. The nurse said the doctor wants a kidney biopsy, because there was protein in the urine. One

year ago creatine was 1.8 . Two months ago the creatine level was 2.6 . The doctor ordered a second one

 and it was 3.06 and when the specialist ordered labs approx 2 weeks ago it was back down to 2.6.

What causes protein in the urine? I do have hp it is running much higher since the doctor changed my hp meds

then went on vacation. 8 weeks ago:

potassium - 3.3 low

glucose 1st time 121 ,2nd time 120, 3rd time 106 all higher than normal

urea nitrogen-32 high

EGFR NON-AFR. AMERICAN- 31 low

EGFR AFRICAN AMERICAN-36 low

everything else was in normal ranges

 Why a biopsy. What does it tell? Any help would be appreciated

Protein in your urine is most likely caused by lupus attacking your kidneys (lupus nephritis).  It usually can be treated with an ace inhibitor.  The biopsy is to determine what, if any, damage has already been done by the disease.  A fairly high % of lupers have kidney involvement.

I have that condition and have some damage but take meds and have returned to completely normal kidney function for the past 7 years.  Kidney involvement can be a serious complication and should not be ignored.  Going to a nephrologist as you have done is the first step which you have done.  Ultrasound tests, 24 hour urine and a biopsy are escalating tests to determine your condition and treatment options.  Of course, the underlying lupus must also be addressed since that is the most likely cause of proteinuria in your case.
