Diagnosed with Chronic Colitis and SLE Lupus. Now, comes all the questions about meds. I've updated my profile to reflect my current meds my rheumatologist has me on. I'm nervous and scared about my hair falling out. I'm a hairstylist, well about to finish school. Hair is what I do, I would be lost if something started happening. So, question is, Methotrexate, any info? Does it help for some? Also, he has me on Medrol?

Medrol will help with the daily pain. It's a non-steriod anti-inflamatory.
Methatrexate will help calm the disease.
My hair only thins during bad flares. I take biotin to help strengthen it and wash my hair in Organix Biotin and Colligen shampoo.
When my hair thins it always comes back curly. I've hadn't had curls since I was a baby. :-)

Hi Melody, anti inflammatory drugs can be hard on your stomach. I've found that eating a good amount of raw veggies will help, cabbage is the most healing and helping thing I've found yet. I've gotten ulcers from nsaids so I have to be very careful. Not every one does though :) . For over a year I tried different medications for the ulcers and honestly raw cabbage was the only thing that healed them!
It restores and produces the healthy flora or something in your stomach. Broccoli is good too, brussel sprouts, kale.

I haven't taken methotrexate but I know a couple of people that do and they have had very little hair loss. I think it depends on the person and the dosage. Hopefully more people will be able to share their experience with it.

Sending hugs your way, although the official diagnosis can sometimes be a relief after so long of wondering what is going on with our bodies, it's still a lot to deal with. I'm just newly diagnosed myself with lupus and it's like going through the stages of grief. Take care

I forgot, to help with the side effects of the mtx take folic acid. Some people need a perscription for it but you can get 800mg OTC and some places you can find it at 1g. I've heard some people have to go higher. Make sure to discuss this with your doctor.

Thank you so much everyone for the thoughts and replies. Couch tater, I did get a Folic Acid RX that I'm picking up tomorrow. :) I will keep you updated on my progress. I'll try and keep my head up and won't let the depression take hold.

Just to clarify, medrol is not an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory) but it is a steroid, so it will absolutely help with the inflammation however with prolonged use it has the same side effect profile as prednisone.

Yup, sangwine is correct, Medrol IS a steroid, not a nsaid. When you see us comment here on prednisone, medrol is a particular formulation of prednisone -- has all the same effects, etc.

I have heard of some hair thinning with MTX, but not really to the extreme. Try to spend your energy getting restorative sleep, balanced healthy diet, some exercise -- it's more helpful than worrying about what *might* or *might not* happen in the future.

Here's another one for ya. I was speaking to my husband on car phone and for about 3 1/2 miles forgot he was on there and got cut off and yelled at someone. Lol. He was doing other stuff and thought I was just busy, little does he forget about the horrid fog! Ha ha. I really have to just laugh at myself now.
