Positive DSDNA antibodies, IGG but negative ANA & Smith

If anyone has info regarding these blood tests please post. I met with doctor today and she said that I don't have lupus with these test results. Is this what they call a false positive?

Lupus is not diagnosed by blood work only. There is a list of 11 indicators of Lupus all rheumatologists must use to diagnose lupus. You need to meet 4 out of 11 to have it. Blood work is on the list of 11.

If the rheumatologist is only looking at blood work then run, not walk, away from them. He is not a good doctor.

I've met 3 out of 11 thus far. I'm 55 and have had arthritis(the family ancestry curse) for 5 years, I had a recent bout with pleurisy (1st time ever) and tested positive to the DSDNA test but negative to ANA and Smith. I keep wondering if the medicines I'm taking are what caused the positive DSDNA report. I take a Keppra and Bupropion and saw some sites targeting medicines as the cause for lupus.

Off topic here, but how do you automatically add diagnosis to the posts like you have done?

Bevys, unfortunately if your rheumatologist has only found 3 of the 11, all you can do is wait or see another rheumy. As for your test values, it helps to know the result ratio of your anti-DS DNA. Also I don't understand "IgG" because everyone has IgG. It is possible to have Lupus and a neg ANA. Lastly there are meds that can cause a false positive anti-DS DNA, but I didn't find yours on the list and I haven't found that they cause drug induced Lupus. I hate to hear of folks who suffer while waiting for a diagnosis, but that is very common with Lupus. Try to stay calm cause stress just makes it worse. Love, Butterflake

I appreciate your input on this puzzling disease. My family is pleased with my GP's diagnosis of me not having lupus, but I would feel more confident in seeing and soeaking to a rheumatologist, though I think my GP conferred with one in order to give me the outcome. Anyway, I wish I could share my familys enthusiasm, but Im finding myself monitoring how I feel pretty closely since the bout of pleurisy and chest pains. Am guessing my GP has to refer me to a rheumatologist before i can see one.

Generally you can visit a rheumy without a referral, unless your insurance says otherwise.

I agree, it's better to talk with a rheumy to see what might be going on in the auto-immune spectrum, they really are the experts in determining what symptoms you may be having (that you haven't even noticed!) that will help them diagnose you.

And of course rheumies are better at treatment, they know all the latest and greatest treatment options.
