Hi.  New to this forum and the Crohn's forum.  I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, Tumid lupus, connective tissue disease, and now possibly SLE.  I have been getting mouth sores on the roof of my mouth that are very painful.  Was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they do for relief.  I have been using Prevention mouthrinse and it helps some.

OH yeah. I just have this problem. It is painful like "hell." I was in pain for literally two weeks, and I am still having a mark on the roof top, but not painful unless I used some hard stick to touch it. It is caused by lupus. The rhmy increased my medication Cellcept, and prescribed me Kenalog to apply three times a day. Also, he said do not use mouthrinse, but warm salt water. It does help though. I do not know it's the medication that works or the salt water. I rinse w/warm salt water three to four times a day + after eating. The doc also prescribed me Lidocaine Hydrochloride Oral Topical Solution to alleviate the pain. It is just a pain killer to apply on the roof top.

Hi hope and welcome. I saw that you found the other person on our forum with tumid lupus. I do get bad mouth sores, especially when I am flaring. I have a prescript ion mouth rinse that helps. The pharmacy mixes it up and it has malox, benedryl, and lidocain. I'm glad you joined the forum and think you will find a lot of support here. Take care and I look forward to hearing more from you.

I get them too and they hurt. I use Gly-oxide which you can buy almost anywhere. It sure does ease the pain and seems to heal them faster than without.

Thank you both for the warm welcome.  I will definitely talk to the doc next week about the meds.  I normally do okay but some days it is painful to drink.  Wishing you both a pain free night,

I get them too and I use Magic mouthwash. It's Xylocaine, mylanta and benadryl mixed together. My rheumy prescribed it to me and it works instantly on the pain. It dries out the sore and cuts healing time in half. I love it.

Hello thr,

I get them too.  On the roof of my mouth and on my inside of my cheeks.  That along with ulcers makes for a very sore mouth at times.  What I use is plain old salt in warm water.  It has antiseptic properties.  Not too much though, it can make you sick. 

I first used after mouth surgery to clean the stitched area, on the recommendtion of the dental surgeon.  I realised then that it would keep my mouth from getting inefected from mouth sores connected to my SLE.

I also use a straw when drinking anything when my mouth is sore.

I don't know why I didn't think of salt water.  I have been using a straw and drinking out of bottles.  Right now the sores aren't too bad because I just got off of 2000mg of antibiotics for two weeks due to an infection.

I get sores in my mouth but they are usually under my tounge. They don't hurt so much as being akward. They get quit big and last for two or three months at a time. I use a mouth rinse from my dr that helps. But I usually just leave it alone as they don't hurt to bad and I figure as long as it isn't bothering me then I can handle it. I am glad that I don't get them on the roof of my mouth. That sounds very painful.

I get sores all over my mouth (cheeks, gums, tongue, under tongue and roof of mouth). My rheumy says it's from lupus and has given me 3 things to help them.... folic acid.. I take 3-5 mg a day, an Rx for a paste that works well on the ones on the inside cheek and the "magic mouthwash" that works for the rest. I hope you find some relief soon.
