I've always been curious about lupus headaches, and particularly what constitutes a "lupus" headache. I've had a headache nearly constantly for a couple of weeks and haven't found a painkiller that will give me any relief. I started looking around on the internet and came across a very interesting site that's a selection from the Lupus Foundation of America Newsletter Articles Library.

thanks for posting this! now i know why vicodin only helps for about 45 minutes.

Thanks Pat, I must not have Lupus headaches. I have been getting several of them this past year but they are always in the morning and go away fairly fast. just to return the next morning upon rising but always go away with in about an hour. I actually think my headaches are being caused by the codeine I take for pain.

I hope you can get some releif for yours. I hate mine and they don't go on like yours do.

Last week I had the worst headache of my life.  I've had headaches before...the kind that you take advil for and 20 minutes later it is pretty much gone.  This headache lasted for three days,  didn't respond to meds and had me sitting in my dark, quiet basement with ice on my head.  I felt like hitting myself in the head with a 2x4 cuz I thought it would help.  (sort of irrational, huh)  I don't know if this was a migraine, or what but I sure do wish I'd hung on to those extra vicodin from my last surgery!  I know how you feel.

I hope you find something to help  ( I wouldn't recommend the 2x4)

Pat, thanks so much for posting this. I know we've talked about this here before, but have never really had any answers. My headaches are so much like what they described as lupus headaches and I never had headaches like htese before having lupus. It was validating to read that and also helped me understand it better. I'm sorry about your headache - they are really miserable. Does yours sound like a lupus headache? Thanks again and I hope you get some relief soon. Take care

Hippi, I've had migraine headaches in the past....the kind that are preceded by an aura and visual changes, that are really quite beautiful. I learned that with those, if I took something the instant I had the aura, the headache would not usually become a full blown sit in Bitzi's dark basement with a 2 x 4. If I waited for the pain to hit, thn I would have been calling Bitzi.

The headaches I have now feel much like a migrane, but without the aura and visual images, and, unlike the migraines I have had, they worsen and subside but never go away. They are usually worse in the afternoons and evenings, unlike Carol's morning headaches.

I'm going to discuss them with my rheumy when i see her in a week and a half. Tramadol just doesn't do the job.

I started having a different kind of headache than you guys are describing last fall. They were intense, throbbing, blinding headaches in the top front of my head -- my whole head felt like it'd turned into a huge heavy electrically charged bowling ball. When I talked with my rheumy about it, he said they were relatively normal for lupus & the associated meds. We increased by prednisone from 10mg to 15mg and I stopped having the headaches. PS They were usually accompanied by some intense (and irrational) emotion, most often rage.

Hi, that was a very interesting article. I know I brought up this subject a litte while ago and everyone shared their symptoms but this is the first time I've actually had any links as to what is a lupus headache. I think lately my headaches are from the eye problems, but that said, my headaches sound so much like the classic migraine. I had the worst one ever not so long ago, horrible nausea, blurred vision and intense pain in my right side. I may ask my doc for the medication mentioned. Does anyone know what this medication might be called here in the uk?? Thanks again for that link x x
