 Thanks for the replies, I guess I should have been more specific...

I realize the risk of contracting herpes if a person has lupus is greater and worse.......  I guess my question is...has anyone ever had to deal with that and what specific risks or harm or organ damage  etc etc...... can it cause.....can it be life threatening?

I do not have experience with oral or genital herpes although i did have shingles which is a type of herpes (zhoster i think its called) which i know is very common in people with lupus. it was SO PAINFUL and i know that in some cases it can cause nerve damage in the spine and pain even after the external symptoms are gone. I am assuming that if you were to contract oral or genital herpes it would be the same as a healthy individual but with more severe symptoms because you are so immunosuppressed. I think genital herpes can cause reproductive problems in women.

Most viruses and diseases can be life threatening if left untreated so i suggest talking to a doctor immediately if you think you have been exposed. you might want to get on a medication like valtrex to control it if you do have a form of herpes. i hope this helps!!

I do not know if the herpes are life threatening. I used to have oral herpes often long time ago. It hurt. Now I am having one. I also had shingles before. It took me quite a long time to heal and it was very very painful. I knew that people who have lupus are very easy to get these kind of stuff; however, I do not know if it's life threatening or harm the organ. I am still here and with no organ damage. : )
If you do have it, I would suggest you to see a doc, because some forms of herpes are quite serious and need to be treated with prescribed medications.

The only time I've heard of herpes being life threatening is if it gets into the brain and causes encephalitis or meningitis. These infections are pretty rare though and I doubt you are at any great risk of this happening.
