Surgery trigger a flare?

I am having a heart ablation in a couple of days. I was wondering if surgery can cause a Lupus flare? Can Lupus attack the organ that is being surgically worked on? The heart ablation is when they burn the part of the electrical system inside the heart that is causing my tachycardia and heart flutter. The surgeon says he is very hopeful it will work. He is concerned about my Lupus and will keep an eye on me. Besides being nervous about the heart surgery I am really concerned about my Lupus flaring. This is my first surgery while having Lupus.

I did not have a flare when I had surgeries; however, there was a Rhumty to keep an eye close on me during my surgeries as well as my recoveries.

By the way, I forgot. I think that time because I could not eat or drink due to open surgery, the rhumty gave me cortisode shot (hope this is what it is called) instead to keep me from flaring. I had this open surgery for quite a long time, and so I do not remember the exact details.

Hi Kitty,

  I hope your surgery goes well and doesn't cause a flare for you. I have had flares in the past from surgeries. The last 2 or 3 surgeries the doctors were more aware of my lupus and treated me with IV pred and antibiotics before and after the surgeries. The pre-op and post-op treatments kept me from flaring.

  I'm glad the surgeon will keep an eye on things. Take care and good luck. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

TRauma can cause a flare but you need to take care of your heart condition.  One is a known risk and the other is only a potential one.  Life if full of those choices and we all have to make them.  I would have your operation and hope for the best.

Hi Kitty, Good luck with the surgery. I'm sure you are very nervous about it. I can't answer your question about if it can attack the organ that is being worked on. I assume you mean because it's already exposed or somthing. I have no expeirence on that subject. I can tell you however that weather you have anything wrong with a certain organ or it's as strong as an ox Lupus can attack it anyway. Like Bill said we have to make choices. They already know about the lupus. I would ask that my rheumy be involved in this surgery as well. It's better he or she is taking care of that part of your treatment. Just a thought.
