Ladybug, you need to check with your insurance co. I have had some insurance where you have to be refered. My current insurance I can schedule appts with a specialist myself. If your dr wants you to see one he should have offered to schedule you an appt with a good reputable one. Maybe he just got caught up in his work. I would call his office & speak to his nurse, they should be able to help you out.

Veronica, I missed the other part of your post, but it sounds like you're trying to get an appointment with a rheumy. Whether or not your insurance requires a referral, it is sometimes better to try to get a referral anyway. It's been my experience that specialists are sometimes hard to get into and if you have a referral from your own doctor you'll get an appointment sooner. Good luck finding one.

I don't have insurance so I pay out of pocket.

I agree a referral will help you get in to see a specialist sooner. Good luck and let us know what you decide and when you get an appt. Take care. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
