Para esophageal hernia

Hi my friends,

Back from vacation (great time except when encephalopathy flared);after we got home had small flare and not enough rest to recover.  Following week had an Endoscopy and colonoscopy: I had a reaction to the colon. prep. but had both procedures anyway, took 4-5 days to get over procedures then out of town daughter and grandson in town, again not enough rest to fully recover. Today first day I half way can tell I might rejoin the human race. Tomorrow I'm scheduled for an eeg: I don't think I have any brain waves left for them to look at!!!

Anyway, one of the things the endoscopy found is a para esophageal hernia. Evidently this is different from a hiatial hernia (I have one of those already). Does anyone have one of these or has anyone heard of this? If so, would you mind sharing? thanks much!

I don't know what a para esophageal hernia is, but I do have a hiatal hernia and reflux and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I hope the hernia they just discovered doesn't give you a lot of discomfort. Like Rosie, I'm wondering how they are going to treat it. I take a wonderful liquid rx called Green Lizard for my hernia and don't have as many ER visits as I did before my PCP prescribed it. It's a combination of an antispasmotic, an antacid, and lidocane which numbs the area. It has been a lifesaver.

When I googled para-esophageal hernia, I found the following explanation:

"What is a Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia?

There are two categories of hiatal hernias, sliding or paraesophageal. With paraesophageal hernias, the gastro-esophageal junction remains where it belongs, but part of the stomach is squeezed up into the chest beside the esophagus. These hernias remain in the chest at all times. With this type of hernia, complications can occur. "

So you lucky thing, you have both types of hiatal hernias and I hope you can find a good gastroenterologist who can help you.

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. I just hate it when we go through times like this when we try to get a little pleasure out of life and pay for it so dearly. Good luck with your EEG & let us know what they find.

Sorry to hear about the hernias. Esophageal problems can be bad. I hope you have a good GI guy that can take care of them. Maybe they can fix them surgically, it might be worth it. My dad has the sliding one and he is constantly battling with gastric reflux and its bad because if your liver is bad, you can die from GERD--my grandmother did. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Sorry the HE reared its ugly head. Sort of more of a vacation than you counted on? Well I hope you are feeling better soon and that you get a chance to rest up after your trip.

Hi Emmie, boy I must be tired the first time I read your post I saw you were scheduled for an eeg tomorrow. I kept thinking how many brain waves does an egg have anyway? I'm like patty I have a hiatal hernia but unlike patty mine rearly gives me problems. They only found it because they were looking for somthing else. I'm glad you are feeling a bit like joining the world. It really stinks being in that "but I can't move mode' I hope you had a good time on your vacation though. Like the others said please let us know how the egg goes tomorrow and if it has any brainwaves left.
