Options in Pain Medication

I have a very sensitive stomach, when I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago the doctor sent me home with pain meds that made me feel like I had a knife in my stomach. I was not able to take them and in July I had some surgery on my arm and my doctor gave me vicodan and it made me sick to my stomach.

Does anyone here know anything about pain patches or pain suppositories, something to by-pass the stomach?

Hi Miss Mag, I have never used the patch but I have heard other people here use it with very different opinions about it. So I am guessing that everyone is different when it comes to the patch. Maybe you are allergic to codeine. My son is and it does the same thing as what you decribed. I really don't have any thing to suggest other than to ask your doctor about it and tell him about your experience. I'm sure they will come up with something you can use.
i'm actually dealing with some pain med issues right now myself. I have heard the good and the bad about the patch. I'm not even sure if my doctor would give it to me.
Let us know what they come up with. In the mean time i'm sure someone will come along soon that can share some information with you on how it works for them

Hi Maggy . . . sorry you are having trouble with your pain meds. Urghhhhh!! I wonder if the doc prescribed a strong antacid to take with the pain meds. My dad had to take an extra rx to protect his tummy from strong Alzheimer meds. Do ask you doctor what he would suggest . . . a pharmacist would also be a great resource for this question. They are generally very helpful. Blessings!

Taking an antihistamine 20 minutes before taking the pain medication may help. I can't take pain medications at all without my stomach getting upset, so I always have to ask for anti-nausea medication along with pain meds. Most anti-nausea meds are antihistamines.

If you want something that isn't a drug for pain, I have found some homeopathic remedies (these are not the same as herbs) to be very helpful (and they don't have side-effects). Most Naturopathic Physicians are familiar with homeopathy and can help figure out what remedy (or remedies) may reduce pain for you - homeopathy is usually prescribed based on a person's unique symptoms and personality, so what works for one may not work for someone else, thus why I haven't given you a list here of the remedies I use for my pain.
