Pred lowering BP??????

I see the rheumy in the morning but also wanted to ask you all if anyone here had ever heard of prednisone lowering blood pressure. I upped my dose to 10mg because I had to end the celebrex and suddenly instead of sky high blood pressure it is suddenly lower than it has been in years- literally. I am somewhat confussed because prednisone has always made me retain water and upped my bp significately and that at 5mg. I just don't know what to think. I am just glad hubby can come with me this time. He sees the same rheumy for his arthritis (some kind of rheumatism but not RA). He may end up on plaquenil. It wouldn't shock me too much if he needed it. Well, I need rest. Hopefully someone here or my rheumy can explain why 10mg lowered the bp while 5mg skyrocketed it.

Prednisone made my blood pressure really high, but my dad was on it for a little while. He took 10mg for a short while and then tapered away. It had his blood pressure low, and also lowered his blood sugar. His doctor had no idea why, but my dad (being a diabetic) took the low blood sugar as a blessing and had some sweets. Sorry if it doesn't really answer, but at least now you know it happened to someone else.

Thanks the rheumy isn't sure why. I see the high risk doctor tomorrow.

Yeah, prednisone is known to make blood pressure higher. I'm on a low dose of Monopril to keep me "normal".  Not sure why your bp would be low all of a sudden.  I doubt it has to do with the prednisone.  Let us know what you find out.

Redrose,pred lowers my bp and my sugar because it reduces inflammation in my fatty liver. If you are overweight, I strongly urge you to have this investigated. When they do an abdominal ultrasound, see if they can check your liver for fat at the same time. Portal hypertension due to ai liver or similar inflammation can possibly improve due to reduction in swelling. In my case this reduction allows me to urinate properly so I retain less water on pred and my bp and sugar go down.

My rheumy thinks I may have AI liver disease, because when on Imuran my liver function tests go back to normal but off it raises. As to fatty liver, I was checked and they do not believe I have that issue. My husband on the other hand who has only 40lbs to lose has fatty liver really bad. He is trying to lose weight for his BP and sugars. I have had abdominal bloating for a few weeks but it is slowly going down. I know that my intestinal tract gets inflammed easily. We still aren't sure what else is wrong but it affects my digestive tract in a big way. The funny thing is I retain water like crazy and 5mg of pred made my BP raise and it is 10mg that has it lowering. At home it is really low now, still normal range though. At the doctor's office it is higher. WEIRD as all get out. When I first got the BP machine it was about the same as the doctors office. Then after the increase in pred two days later I had a drastic drop.

Now if it is high it is from pain. My nerve block wore off.

Remember there is something called antidiuretic hormone and all these other hormones and the dose affects all these things so apparently the 10mg is the right dose maybe, I'm on twenty, maybe we need that much to get swelling down or whatever it is? but 5mg might do the same thing if you hardly ever took pred or if you took 5mg for a long enough time. I would still have them check with the ultrasound when they look at the baby if they can. Or talk to gi about it. Fatty liver can be really really bad, very serious and fast progressing and is present in almost every overweight person. There is tx, I'm on vitamin E and glucophage, tell hub and check net on it. vitamin e really good tx, and helping gi and all. Take care and brief (hugs) to save space.

Celebrex can raise blood pressure! If you recently came off Celebrex and your blood pressure dropped, you could have developed a sensitivity to aspirin products! It happened to me. Something to consider.
