Herx from Cipro??

Does Cipro kill Lyme or any of the co-infections? 

I've been on IV Cipro for a staph infection in my abdomen (a big lump under my skin that is slowly shrinking) for about 11 days.  For the last few days, my Lyme/co-infection symptoms have become a lot more intense, but I know Cipro also has some pretty bad side-effects especially tendon issues. 

So how does one tell the difference between Lyme joint pain and Cipro-related tendon side-effects?

Hi Razzle.  I am sorry you are dealing with a staph infection.  How long will you be on the Cipro?  It can be hard to tell what tendon pain is.  When I had tendon pain, it was pretty intense pain in the wrist and inside the elbow but it can be in other areas also.  Make sure you let your doctor know what type of pain you are having so it can be determined if it is tendon pain.

Hey Razz. When I first got sick with Lyme (about a year into it) I was treated with Cirpo for something else and within a week my Lyme was completely symptom free. Of course when I went off it the Lyme came back but Cipro can have an effect on Lyme.

Sorry about your staph infection, ouch!

Cipro was the first abx I started on for Lyme, it brought on my fever (still going, day 29!!), and is now partnered with Minocycline.

It is difficult to determine what is drug side-effects, what is Lyme, and what is herx, but I do not think I am experiencing any side-effects to the meds.

Signs & Symptoms of Tendon Rupture

The tendon most frequently associated to the Cipro induced ruptures is the Achilles tendon, however Cipro has also been linked to tendon ruptures in the rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb. Below is a brief list of symptoms often associated with an Achilles tendon rupture:

* sudden and severe pain
* swelling and bruising
* difficulty walking

Signs & Symptoms of Tendonitis

Symptoms of tendonitis that are produced near a joint aggravated by movement include the following:

* Pain
* Tenderness
* Mild swelling, in some cases

Tendonitis in various locations in your body produces these specific types of pain:

Tennis elbow. This type causes pain on the outer side of your forearm near your elbow when you rotate your forearm or grip an object. Golfer's elbow causes pain on the inner part of your elbow.
Achilles tendonitis. This form causes pain just above your heel.
Adductor tendonitis. This type leads to pain in your groin.
Patellar tendonitis. In this type, you experience pain just below your kneecap.
Rotator cuff tendonitis. This tendinitis leads to shoulder pain.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

My doctor thinks it is a herx. The pain in any one spot doesn't last more than a day and which joints are affected keeps changing ~ e.g., today, the top of my left foot and my right wrist hurt most, and yesterday, it was the back side of my left knee and knuckles on my left hand that were hurting the most. I don't think it is sudden onset pain, seems to sneak up on me.

I'll be on Cipro at least through Friday, pending results of culture sample taken from the drainage from the belly infection.

This post is from 2009 so it is old, but I'm also currently on IV Cipro again, at 400mg 2x/day.

Oh my!!! Get off the Cipro. You are allergic. That drug is the devil. I'm living the hellish nightmare of cipro for the last 8 months. Trust me. It's the root of the tendo problems. They move and they cycle and they will worsen the longer you stay on it. I used to run marathons and that drug ruined me. Research and read ways to detox from flouroquinolones. I can help you.

I, too, am a victim of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics.  Mine was Levaquin.  The 2nd day of taking this pill I had big time cns problems.

There are side effects from most antibiotics. Some will suffer more than others of course, so abx of all types must be used with caution and with clear communication with your practitioner so that you may be directed to a something safer for you to use should a bad reaction occur.
