Hi !

Haven't written anything on this site for a while as I have been doing quite well.  I finally found a wonderful neuro/infectious disease doc at IU and she started me on Doxy. Have been feeling pretty good for the past 5 months, but the past 2 weeks I have had some flare-ups, so increased my Doxy dose. The intense hot flashes are back and I just radiate heat to everyone around me. Also, the headaches and fatigue are returning.  So, my question is regarding pulse therapy with Doxy and Biaxin, or Azithromycin.  You take one antibiotic for one month and then switch to the other, and go back and forth so as to limit resistance that might develop over time.  I am planning on talking to my doctor about this very soon.  Anyone have any comments?  thanks to you all for this great forum. It has helped me enormously!!!!

Hi petma.  What dose of Doxy are you taking and what dose did you start out at?  Have you been tested for co-infections?

From what I understand, doctors who pulse meds do not pulse them by switching one med every month.  I believe it is more of a two week on/two week off cycle or similar schedule with specific meds on specific days.  If someone is taking continuous antibiotics, it is usually for more than one month and it is not unusual to be on a combination.

What coinfection are you targeting?

If it is bart you may benefit if you'd add bactrim to your biaxin. Zithromax (oral) was the most worthless abx I've taken. However others claim it worked well for them. Makes me wonder if the different strands react better to one abx than another. Biaxin has been a great drug for me but that was one of other meds I take.

I was given Levaquin this week for bart. Burascanno believes it is the best abx for bart if you can tolerate it. Some times it causes tendonitis. I do not know about going from one drug to the next every other month, trying to treat lyme one month and bart the next. From what I understand lyme does not grow as rapidly as bart so you can take a few weeks off. I am currently off treatment for that for a couple of weeks. But bart patients tend to relapse almost immediately so I don't believe it would be a good idea to have gaps in your treatment.
