I just got back from the health store and they had EDTA in pill form on the shelf. It did say it should be taken along with (I don't remember exact words) something that made me think other medical attempts to extract metals from the body. So I got the impression that the oral really wouldn't do much on it's own.
That's correct, it won't. Oral EDTA alone is good for one thing only, to bind heavy metals in a meal you've just eaten. For instance you love fish, but don't want to introduce any more mercury into your system. Oral EDTA taken with the fish meal will bind it and carry it out with your stool.
EDTA is extremely poorly absorbed via the gut. Almost none of it will get into your bloodstream that way, and by the time you do get enough into your system to be even a bit helpful you'll have very high levels of it persisting in your gut for quite a while absorbing all the minerals you eat. Not a good thing. Has to be intravenous or nothing unfortunately.
