Lyme Moms; I need advice about getting my 3.5 yo tested

Hello all,

I was diagnosed with Lyme last July. Never saw the bite or had a rash (that was obvious). So I really don't know how long I've had Lyme.  The year before my diagnosis I had GI and pelvic pain that was never diagnosed.I've also have had chronic back pain/injuries for over 15 years.

So..... I have a 3 1/2 yr old whose normal developmentally and behaviorally.  When I started seeing my LLMD, she gave me an old collegue of her's e-mail from NJ who specializes in pediatric Lyme.  I e-mailed him with all my son's history, and mine, and he responded by saying he probably didn't have Lyme, but to get him tested if it made me "feel better".

Well, I just saw "under our skin" a couple of weeks ago.  One of the women in the film was pregnant and had Lyme. Her son tested positive at birth but had no symptoms up to age 2 (the end of filming).  That was encouraging to see he didn't show any symptoms, but it really made me think about getting my son tested!

Shane, my son, has had a couple of fevers with sore throat in the last two weeks.  And I'm really concerned that if I did take him to his Pediatrician, they would just write it off as a virus or something when it might really be Lyme.

Should I have him tested and does anyone know of a pedicatric Lyme MD in california?  And if yes to testing, should I have the co-infection panel done also?  What symptoms do toddlers have?

It is perfectly normal for kids to have a few colds during a winter, I have a large family and I have kids with runny nose since the winter started and I dont think they have Lyme, when I was first diagnosed I saw Lyme in every one of my kids for different reasons and by now I have accepted the fact that I had lyme and a bad case of it, I got better but I learned not to allow my mind to wander and just see the facts as they are, honestly I do understand where you are coming from, we are all scared as we know what this can do to a person and how an early diagnosis helps

Did you have Lyme before the birth of your kids?

Hi Lisa.
My family's Lyme story is a long one. Hubby has probably had Lyme since he was a kid. We think I have had Lyme since I was in my 20's- passed from him to me, perhaps.

Gary finally got diagnosed 3 years ago and has been treated by an llmd for 2 yrs. The more we learned about Lyme, the more we felt it was important for all of us to get tested. Last year, My kids and I all gave out 12 vials of blood each :)
And we all came back positive for Lyme and various co-infections.
My kids never had any real strong symptoms- however in hindsight we see the pattern that they most likely did have it from birth.
Both kids have been on treatment for 1 yr- my DD has been symptom free for 3 months and is slowly (very slowly) weaning off of abx and using Cowden herbs.
My son had a harder case of of it- I guess immune systems all react differently-- and he is still experiencing several symptoms. But we are seeing good improvement in him since he started treatment too.

The thing of it is-- he might be symptom free now- and the Lyme might just be hiding quietly. And at some point, some stress to the body can bring it all out.

IMHO- I would have your child tested through Igenix if you can.
BUT-- do not stress over it- Kids seem to bounce back so much more easily than adults. And a fever/sore throat on its own might mean nothing. But if you have seen a pattern of joint pains, fatigue, flu-ish symptoms when no one else is sick..... take a look and have him tested.

My son was hospitalized with lethargy and dehydration and a little rash when he was 2. At that time they suspected cat scratch fever, but I couldn't figure out what they heck they were talking about. Now that I know I have lyme, and my older son has lyme, it put everything in perspective.

We did a homeopathic remedy for lyme that helped his behavioral stuff. His cd-57 test is low, so his immune function is crappy. But he is okay, and we haven't tested or treated with any western medicine. With the exception of the iv antibiotics 2 years ago. He bounced back at the hospital after 12 hours or so. They didn't pursue a dx. If only I knew then what I know now.

I would recommend that you bring it up at EVERY visit and find a Lyme friendly pediatrician at the very least. The docs at our ER know that congenital lyme is real, so that helps.

Since your baby is fighting these colds with fever and the such....how does he handle them? how high are his fevers? does he kick a cold in 3-5 days or does it take him 2 weeks, an x ray and going to the dr.s alot?
does he want to play? is he happy?
does he cry alot? does he eat well? or does he throw up all of the time.
does he sleep well?
if is is in overal good condition it would be a good time to get his ummune system i up and going stronge. I have my 5 year old on some things that have helped her out alot. and she got lyme yet again in July. But she is doing very well now.
you can tap on my directly and I will share the things that the dr.s put her on. we mix it in juice for her. it is easy.
kids get over lyme much easier that we do. but they may beed a boost.
