Pitcher Plant Anyone? It catches bugs!

Hi all,

Well, a friend of mine bought this plant in New York and I never heard of it until she told me about it.   This is such a funny plant but after watching this video, it really catches those bugs!

I saw similar ones in the botanical garden`s exotic greenhouse in my city; they love it hot and humid and those attractive "traps" of the ones I saw smelled fishy; I was told the gardeners "feed" them with tiny crumbs of cheese if they don`t catch enough insects. Dont know if its true but if they are so much after proteins, it would make some sense.

Awesome video!!  I loved watching it.  Plants like these don't "eat" the insect.  Plants get all their energy from photosynthesis.  These types of plants live in areas with very very poor soil.  These plants have adapted to this environment by getting their needed nitrogen from decaying insects.  Organic matter will release nitrogen as it decays.  It is really fascinating.

hey that is cool!!! they do not eat it but produce their own fertilizer?! Thanks for explaining, Gretchen! What an interesting knowledge transfer place this is!!

Hehe..........it is amazing!!!  I am not actually a big plant fanatic.  I DO like them though.  It seems to me that this living thing that can't think or move or anything has some major skills!!!  It can make its own food (glucose) by using carbon dioxide and water.  It then releases the by product of oxygen!!!  Sweet deal for us!!!  No matter how long I sit in the sun.......all I do is get burned!!!

Yup the pitcher plant along with the venus fly traps make their own fertilizer.
