only thing i can think of that makes any since is. if you live in a longer city and your out much you breath in fumes from cars and so on. when your in bed it could be relest from your lungs and then your able to smell them.

i am a smoker so i smell it all the time. but i do know that at night sometimes i cant stand to smell my own cigs

Welcome to the world of "hypersensitivity", or "hyper-hallucination". It does happen. I had several weeks of Hyper-smell - all I could smell was spaghetti sauce! I also had auditory hallucitations.... which I've already decsribed on this site..... but that's never stopped me from repeating myself - haha!

It sounded like Highschool band music over and over and over again. It sounded like everyone was "tuning" up.... "starting a song".... and them the band teacher waved his wand like "No, no, no. Everyone start again." And, then the whole F'n thing would start "over again" in my head. I literally ran outside to see if I could hear it for real!

Lyme disease sucks!

So this is a Lyme thing??? I live nowhere near the city. It's weird though a lot of my neurological stuff happens when I lie down at night. Except my face twitching. That is all the time. I actually was reading today somewhere that the smell halucinations could have something to do with a nerve disorder...bingo Lyme!!!

Unusual smells can also be a symptom of migraine and strangely enough, migraine does not always involve a headache. D

That is interesting. Do you smoke?
My sense of smell was too acute...it drive me nuts. I was like a blood hound. And being able to smell everyone...all the time.
ha...the music thing in the head....oh gosh.....I do not miss that at all!

I don't smoke and no one in my family smokes. The only headaches I get with the Lyme thing are in the back of my head and they can be really brutal for me. Feels like someone is squeezing my brains back there. I didn't realize you could have migrain problems without the actual headache.

I've hand lyme for about 12 years but just diagnosed few wks ago. I have those phantom smells and yes some times it smells like cigarette smoke.....I don't smoke my husband used to smoke but not in the house for several years.

Last week I had the strong smell of caramel cooking.....went looking in the kitchen was sure something was burning.......no one was cooking anything or had been.

I guess this may explain why I had that heightened smell when I had that bad headache the other day. It was aweful. I could not get that nasty smell out of my nose. It was more of a burnt smell for me.

OMG! This explains so much of what I just couldn't figure out. lol I'm not sure anymore if my sense of smell is just heightened or if I'm smelling things that just aren't there. Very strange and so annoying.

I live in a first floor coop apartment and one of my friends jokes that I blame so much on the poor basement. I'm always smelling strange things that I know are coming from that darn mysterious basement area beneath my apartment. lol
