Hi all,
my sister is allergic to rifampin and rocephin and does not like the bad herx she gets from levaquin, do you have any reccomendations for other bartonella antibiotics or medicines she could look into.

Hey JIJI,

I'm sorry your sister is having such a rough time treating Bart. I'm not sure if there is a more natural treatment for Bart but if there is, these girls would know. I'm gonna bump your post up to get more answers.

Levaquin is the drug of choice and if it is too strong she could hold some doses and go easy- some docs prescribe it in a pulsed fashion 2-3 x/week. The Herx is a good sign as you know......also many including myself who never considered taking an antidepressant had to during Bart treatment. I have been using a very low dose of Paxil (only 3 mg) daily and it has enabled me to stay on Bart treatment.

Other treatmetns are HH capsules from Dr Zhang-- I take these as well as my antibiotics- but started with this- doing 4 /day-- she could start with 1/day and gradually increase. Bart is such a hard organism to treat and causes such horrible herxes but she will not be able to recover form or respond to Ly,e treatments until this is under control. If she tolerates HH capsules she could add in Zhang Artemesiae as there is supposed to be some cross cover for Bart but as she improves0- she will need to do antibiotics at some point for Bart (my opinion)-- docs also use Plaquenil/Zmax/Doxy (or TCN), Levaquin/Bactrim, Rifampin/Minocycline/Zithromax, Bactrim/Zmax

Oh and forgot to mentionsince I see she is on IV -- Claforan IV is great for Bart- but she will herx with any antibiotic-- the key is to go slow if she needs to == there were weeks when I had to do it every other day (Claforan) or hold it longer if needed-- eventually as the counts fall she will have less herx and can move forward- this is not a race.

Is Amox effective for Bart? I don't know that I have it, but still need to be tested. If Amox is effective, then I won't worry.

JIJI, I am also very sorry about your sister and her current battle. I hope she finds some relief very soon!

I tested negative for Bart but knew I had it. The labs currently only test for one or two strains, and there are many more than that. Therefore don't go by tests. A good LLMD will go by symptoms.I believe Bart symptoms are the last to go and is very difficult to terat.

I have found that Levaquin and cipro cause tendon issues almost immediately with me so I cannot take them. But have had success with Rifampin and Zithro, have also taken rifampin with mino as well. I did not herx that much at all and feel so much better (Most days).

How you doing now Minerals? I think my Bart is better now I am into Lyme big time
