i get a email from a Vet each day on any number of things. and i thought this one may be of use to some of ya'll. as many of us who have lyme, also have pets with it as well.

Imas and Eukanuba both are now adding Prebiotics in there food lines. i have also checked the labels on my dogs an cats bags and sure enough its in there. name to look for is FOS (fructooligosaccharides).

 

i have used Imas for 10 yrs with my rotties. as they are bron to dry skin and its one of the only foods out there with both omega 3 & 6. i have no interest in this company. 

 

and yes my male who is now almost 11 y/o has lyme but is doing very well now. he was treated with 1 month abx. dogs seems to handle it a lot better then we do. if caught in time. and i still wish my vet could treat me.LOL

Thanks for reminding me that I want to find a supplement for my dog for his immune system. His dry food contains natural ingredients and does have something for digestion, but I want to add something extra. He has been okay since spring, but recently started chewing between his foot pads again, which was one of his symptoms of Lyme, but I noticed that he seems to be doing it when it has been raining a lot, and it has been again. One thing that has been working is the repellant. I am trying to keep us both as healthy as possible.

Hope you puppies and their parents are all doing well! Hope you find healing soon too!

thats odd.. my little yorkie has been chewing between his front paws for about a year now.. i have to stop him, i thought it was wierd that one day he wasn't doing it, and then he was.... so that is a sign of lyme?

My vet told me that chewing can be a way of cleaning their feet. My Rat Terrior does it and I brought it up to my vet about it. I noticed too that if it is raining or if the grass has just been cut, that he does it more.

Maybe allergies too? It's good to have it checked either way though.

The first time my dog had Lyme, he started to chew between his pads, and he had never done that before. That went on for a week or two, until one day he started to do nothing but lay around, and walk as if stiff in the legs. That was in 2006, and he was only about a year old, so this was very obvious, and I took him to the vet that day, and got him on the doxy.

We were both on doxy together in April, and since then, on and off, he starts to chew at his foot pads, but it seems to be when we have a lot of rain, and walking in the wet grass. I haven't seen any ticks since June, so the repellant must be working! Does anyone know what to put in the irritated area, to sooth it,? The last time we were at the vet, I was told I could give him Benadryl or an antihistamine without decongestant, but I really don't want to give him meds unless he really needs them.

i feel ya on figuring out what your dog has. did you get him tested for lyme? i did, and it came back negative.. he was on doxy for 3 weeks, but now he has a red prickly rash on his stomach down to his legs, and little scab like bumps throughout his body, but its really bad on his back legs around his stomach.. i took him to the vet and they ran a cbc which came back normal, and they did another lyme test which i haven't heard yet.. I did catch a flea on him though about a week ago, and after that the rash started.. i have him on frontline though, so this is weird... He has been acting strange over the last week, very lazy, won't climb into bed with me.. very distance.. i'm sad

He was never tested, but treated according to symptoms for Lyme twice, in 2006 and in April of this year. He responded to the doxy quickly and the only thing that he still does from time to time is chewing in his foot pads, which the vet did say was most likely an allergy. We've been getting lots of rain on and off all summer and it seems to be when it is bothering him. I do wipe his paws when they are muddy, but not usually when just wet, but will start doing that to see if it helps. Even in the morning with the dew. I should have thought of that sooner.

Have you told the vet about the flea? Maybe it's that? In which case you probably want to avoid having him on the bed just now anyway. It is sad when they don't feel good. Hope you both heal soon!

Hi ya'll

my male was Dx with lyme last yr. he was placed on abx for 1 month and retested 3 months later. and showed his body was fighting it.

the other day he had a liver enzyme test done and showed his liver wasnt working right. new med for that was 78 bucks for 2 wks to be retested in 30 days.

in more cases of lyme in dogs it makes they joints hurt. and they have many joints in there feet. you may want to invest in dog boots. i have them for both mine.

james as for the flea and your dogs rash. it can be a allergy. my male has only been bit by 2 fleas his hole life and both times it was a 200 dollar vet bill. he lost almost all his hair too.

licking can become a habit in dogs. so it needs to be addressed fast. you can use boots for walks and then socks when inside. i have seen dogs who will lick till they lick to the bone.

we had the puppies outside for most of the day yesterday and wouldnt you believe it. we found a lil tick crawling on 1 of the pups. this is the first tick i have seen here in 3 yrs. as they are only 5 wks old today. they are way to young to use anything on them.

but i am going to treat my yard for them. i will have to do it in 2 parts. the front yard first then after it is safe for the pups to go back on it i can do the back yard. they have to be able to go outside. less poop for me to have to deal with.LOL and with 8 of them i have a poop factory here.

my vet is really annoying.. i told her about the flea i saw on him, she said just to watch the spots.. they are getting worse.. i spent 180 last week at the vet, i'm not going to spend that again for the same problem i came to them about last week... its crazy... its not normal for your dog to be covered in puss filled bumps all over... :ugh!!

james. if i was you i would call around and ask questions from other vets. there is a spray to help for that. its used for hot spots. ask about using it on your baby. also you can use neosporin on a dog. if its somewhere they can reach.

use something to cover it up so they can not lick it. you can get more things at a good pet store. and believe it or not. the folks who work at em know a lot too.

if you would like you can email me and i may be able to help you a lil more. i worked at a vets for a short time. i couldnt handle it when they passed away so i left. but i do more treatments on my babies.

kinda like going to the DR you go when you know whats wrong with you and tell the DR what to do for you. JMHO

Thanks RD! I was thinking about boots, but not sure if he will want to wear them for one thing and my husband will really think I've cracked is the other reason I haven't tried them. But hopefully just keeping them dry after walking will help.

James, that's what I thought it sounded like too. I thought I had heard of dogs allergic to fleas. One thing I don't seem to have here is fleas, so I don't know what to do for that, but RD's advice sounds good, and I believe she knows what she's talking about!

I think my poor little Pomeranian is allergic to fleas too and I think it causes her seizures. I haven't been on top of things like I should be lately from feeling so bad. I will have to make my husband go pick some flea meds up at the vet.
