California sun,
I am on cholestyramine for the 2nd time. The 1st time, I noticed that it had sugar in it, and got a perscription for the product alone from a compounding pharmacy. It really made a huge difference in my progress. I doubt if insurance covered that.
Lately, I suddenly noticed my stomach was collecting fat at a quick rate, and my MD told me to start the cholestyramine again. I did, and it wasn't helping as much. Then I noticed the compounding product, and realized I was taking the sugar variety again! I changed over to the straight product, but I haven't been able to kick the sugar habit, so it's been slow going losing the flab that gathered in my middle--it got to about 75% gone, and has stayed there. I haven't been that bad with my eating, so I wonder if I need to have metal chelation again, or something.
If you do end up with the straight product, the thing to do is to mix it and drink it as quickly as possible. The longer it sits, the more powerfully it sticks to every surface. I only have to follow up with one glass of clear water, and when I let it sit, I have to work at getting my mouth, etc clear with several glasses of water--no fun!
