I live in a rural area and have an acre of woods and many, many trees around my house. Lots of deer, coons, possum, fox....etc.
I also have four cats and because I hardly ever walk in the woods I know one of them brought in the tick that got me. That was last Summer and I no longer let my cats out. I too live in fear of this disease and if I feel sick and am running a fever I take doxycycline right away. Better safe than sorry.
Your biggest risk will be your pets. Even if you use Frontline a deer tick could be hanging on the tips of their fur and easily drop off in the house and there is really not much you can do except keep your dogs out of the wooded areas.
For yourself: Spray your shoes, socks, pant legs, hair and hat with Deet.
You can also remove your clothes and put them in a dryer which will kill ticks. Interestingly ticks can survive a washing machine, but not the heat of a dryer.
And then of course do a body check in a bright light.
Not easy because the nymphs, which are usually the ones that infect us are so darn hard to see being no bigger that the period at the end of this sentence.
pickenpox is right about
Guinea Hens, it's a fact they are great for ridding your property of ticks and other bugs, but they can be noisy.
Good luck. Your 26 acres with barn and house sound wonderful.

Edited to say: I didn't know about chickens, good idea they are quieter and fresh eggs too. :-)
