Hi Dowa,
My breasts are always sore and swollen, and have been for a long time. It used to be cyclical, with my monthly periods. I would get a reprieve for maybe one week per month.
During the past year, my periods have become irregular. I'm 48. Blood tests about
6 years ago indicated perimenopause. I believe I am now in the early stages of menopause.
The breasts have been sore and swollen for the past couple of years, with one reprieve lasting a couple of months. Years ago I was dx'd with fibrocystic breast disease, now known as just fibrocystic breasts because it's not a disease.
I used to be on Depo-Provera (injections every 3 months) in order to treat the breast pain and swelling, and PMS. Right now, I trying evening primrose oil 500 mg (I take two twice daily). Too soon to tell...
The possible association with Lyme has occurred to me, as "unexplained breast pain" is listed symptom of Lyme, and Lyme is known to mess with our hormones. The pain and swelling aggravate me, as my "girls" are already large. I'm hoping this condition will cease post-menopause. I recently heard Dr. Oz saying that the breast pain and swelling can be caused by both estrogen and progesterone.
It's all very confusing and aggravating, isn't it? In your case, I think it would be worth seeing your doctor about
it in order to rule out other possible causes. And I hope you are getting regular mammograms. When all other possible causes are ruled out, I think it might to safe to assume that your culprit could be Lyme.
Take good care, and do let us know how you're managing with it.
