Simela, you can find ceftriaxone (generic rocephin) online for about $12/vial, plus you need the infusion supplies. It's a very common medication, used for lots of things, and one of the least expensive of the IV meds. I don't know of anyone who is using the non-generic.

I had my initial PICC put in at one hospital, and then a replacement put in at another when the infusion rate slowed down too much. Both were in the $2500 range for the full pay price, then they took the insurance discounts.

If you're having a home nurse, it can be very expensive. See if there is a local infusion center or doc's office who will do it for less if you don't get the PICC line.

Even if your LLMD is out of network, you should be able to use an in-network facility to install the PICC. Some insurance requires a doctor order but not a preauthorization for PICCs, so check that as well.

On the infusion companies, I found that the out-of-network ones cost me less than the in-network ones, so do shop around! Some of the ones I listed above are more pro-active than others in billing insurance, and some are more geared towards lower-priced meds for cash customers.

Lindaca: Some people say some of the generics are no good. I wish I could find the right one, but it is so hard. I think the $12/vial is not made in US. Someone said that Indians have the least (can't think of the word) in monitoring the process of drug making. So I am not necessary shooting for the cheapest, but for one that is just as good and for a lower price. I'd have to talk to my dr about it bec I am clueless as to which ones to trust.

Definatelly I have to look into the PICC cost and price it from different hospitals. Home nurse is covered 100% by my insurance. Maybe that is why they are not paying for much else. They are making it so expensive that most people probably back down and don't need the home nurse. I do not think I need one.

Thanks for the info, I have to make some calls on Thursday-Monday. I will see my dr on Tuesday and need to ask him to try something else, I just need to figure out what that something else is.

Hi all- this is my very first post to this forum.  I got my picc line installed 3 days ago for rocephin- just starting... after 9 months of oral antibiotics.  Very helpful info about pricing-  thank you everyone,  and you all made me laugh about the husbands!  I own Under Our Skin- and my MD researcher  husband won't!!!!!! watch it.  It has been a painful process for us, but he is little by little getting there. (Hasn't asked me lately when I think I will be able to join him for next Mt. climbing, biking, etc. trip-  perhaps next month, dear?) tongue   and mad .  Gosh you gotta laugh.
