What a great article! This article is written for Fibro sufferers but I think it helps with all Chronic Illnesses.

I really liked #5:

5. Create a new self. If we hang on tightly to the "old self" we were, finding the value of our "new self" becomes increasingly difficult. (We may even exaggerate how fit that person was: "I didn't need any sleep, I never felt bad, I could do anything!"). This does not mean we should totally discard our previous conception of self; rather, we need to find a way to integrate the two. In other words, we should seek to find in our new bodies new ways to enjoy and experience the things that we had done before. Consider all the aspects of yourself that you like, and the things that you most want to do; then step by step, find ways to achieve as many of these as you can. At the same time, recognize that our expectations must shift so that we can once again meet them.


One of the things I discovered as I walked this healing journey, is there was a lot of attitudes my 'old self' held that were very unhealthy. I had lots of time for examining those attitudes (and why I held them) and then learning how to let them go, creating a much healthier me.

Thank you for posting this - I thought a lot of Denise as I read this as she is always talking about the power of a healthy attitude.

Wacko- I struggled with #5 for a while and still sometimes struggle. It is very hard to let go of our old selves but we have to push on. If we don't, it will make us miderable. We have to look at it as if we have a "new body", but it is different. We have to learn what our new body can do. Kind of like rediscovering ourselves.

It is hard to let go of our old selves. But what I have found is that the more I heal, the more of the 'real me' is returned to me, without the 'old way' of looking at things. It has been amazingly freeing.

wow those were good and obviouslly written by someone experienced in the matter!

I know its important to track the days, but have tried so much i have given up. I can tell when a flare is coming on (flare for lack of a better word) and I pretty much know what my body is going to do but my mind can't remember to keep track in a journal when they occur, I am guessing there's a pattern and that pattern can be broken or interruped with stress.

I really liked the one about the new self. I never gave it more than a minutes thought but illness has changed me so much, obviously bad but some good too.. I am not who i used to be I mean everybody changes and grows ( i hope) but whatever it is I "got" metamorphosized me (sp?) I just got old overnight, it was and is a lot to try to deal with. I am soooo much closer to God now and I think too have been given many gifts from the sixth sense i wouldn't have had or if I had had wouldn't have slowed down enough to listen? does that make any sense? I have no idea what I have. alls I know is I had the lyme rashes in 1996 and have forever changed. One dr. told me years ago lisa we know u are sick and its a virus but there are soooooo many viruses we can't pinpoint it. This was actually in 90-94 then I miraculously got totally healed forgot about it and in 96 had the multiple em rashes, very soon after I entered a train wreck. If i can j ust have some feeling the kids are going to do ok I am satisfied and so far God is good. (with the kids, things looking up) for me I just try to like the sickie me, the old one was probably a lot more fun :)

How are you doing Roses?

I have had many blessings myself, despite the tick-born infections! The new me is a much more content person, and it's much easier for me to be content. It has really made me appreciate the more 'simple' pleasures of life.

Have you tried to start off by tracking only one thing at a time, say for a week? You could get one of those really big calendars that you can write on & write down some highlights each day? Just a thought.
