Best Antibiotic? Lyme Pos. 3 year old

Hello all,

My toddler tested positive for Lyme after experiencing nightly leg pain. Our pediatrician put him on amox for a couple of weeks. Symptoms seem to have subsided but he tested positive (same levels) a couple of months later.

Knowing the importance of early and complete treatment I was wondering if there was suggestions for the best type of antibiotic to treat lyme and the duration for a toddler.

Also, what is the downside to lengthy antibiotic treatment for toddler?

Looking for angels for my little angel.

Welcome to our forum!!! I am sooo very sorry to hear that you r little toddler has tested positive for these nasty infections - but you have found a great place to ask questions, vent some frustrations if needed and to learn!! I'm certain that you will find us to be a caring, helpful & understanding group.

It would really save you some time if you read through the thread at the top of our forum titled, "New to Lyme?...Start Here!", as it is packed full of good info that the members here have put together.

There is one Lyme-literate Medical Doc (LLMD) that I am aware of that has some great information about treating children with tick-borne infections. Here is that website - although we hope to see you here as much as possible!!

I did check it out as per your suggestion and found lots of good info. Thanks also for the Dr. Jones link. We are pretty happy with our pedi. He is definitely lyme literate ... But at a 10th grade level (another way of saying good but maybe not the best)

He prescribed another course (5 weeks) of amox rather reluctantly. Our son had been on one before but I felt better safe than sorry and we were having difficulty telling if he still had symptoms. He also tested the same ( it has been two months since he finished his last course).

Any feedback much appreciated.

Just got startled reading"The Top Ten Lyme Disease Treatments", Rosner.

In it he strongly warns against treating with Amoxicillin which is what my three year old is on. He claims it can actually make it worse by causing it to cyst. I have been the only other Antibiotics I have found to treat children my son's age (3) are also in this "Cell wall inhibitors" class.

I am getting a little anxiety here. Any help much appreciated.

Don't freak out.. I happened to see that last week and coincidently another woman said her child was treated with amoxy by Dr. B. so you really gotta look over maybe what the big pediatric guy does in Conn.

the main thing is not to stop too soon and have relapse. also are you suspecting bartonella?
what about parasites? they always leave that out and it is the easiest test.

stool test but has to be from either Metametrex or I saw another one n the Insights into Lyme book.

that is the book all the doctors should be reading. go to chapter 3 i know she mentioned another stool lab.

any pets? are your kids extra cuddly with pets. ???? be careful

I'm not sure if this is overly helpful but I am in the same shoes as yourself.  I've been recently diagnosed with lyme/bart and so have my 2 yr old and 4 year old.  They have been on antibiotics for almost a month and I'm becoming distressed.  Currently I am researching the possibility of rife treatment.  I thought I would test it on myself first and if it seems successful then I want to do the same for them.  I hate the thought of antibiotics lowering their immune function even more when their systems are not even fully developed.  I'm not trying to cause you more anxiety, just thought you should know that other options may exist.  Some antibiotics may still be necessary to get out of cyst form, then rife for the kill.  Best wishes, Devinepainter

the rife I felt helped me but I don't think it is something that cures you. I think you have to have the machine and have everyone hop on it every week maybe even. Plus you have to have it programed for the abesia, for the bartonella, for the this and that. lots of people use their rifes and don't have them programed.

the one I was on was either $25,000 or $35,000 ( of course I can't remember.)

It has thin rectangle metal pads for your feet, two long glass tubes to place in different areas.

also asythromax or zythromycen is an antibiotic that this place used on everyone. IV and pill form.

I am going to find out the brand of that machine.

when you have a whole house that is lyme I guess it is good investment and other things like the sauna.

I don't sweat anymore being in southern AZ. it too dry . It just makes even more pain not sweating out toxins

A friend of mine who went to one of the doctors featured in the film 'Under Our Skin'.....a top LLMD.....prescribed Amoxicillin for her Lyme. She was on it for several months and does feel she is 'cured'. No more symptoms ---going on four years now.

I am on Amoxicillin as well (one month so far) after a failure (and other issues) with Doxycycline...and I am well on the way to feeling much better. But we'll see!

Not trying to disagree with your info or anyone else's about Amoxicillin. Just wanted to share some Amoxicillin positives.

Thanks for the feedback all. Really appreciate it. Parents know my own illness is nothing compared to making sure my little guy is cured so I want to make sure we are doing everything right.

Glad to hear positives about the Amox. Have any of you heard what duration might be best or is used by LLMDs. Any other suggestions most appreciated.

You must be scared
I want u to know both of mine had this stuff I was scared stiff
amoxocillin was used on both and they both got well!! I was told kids are easier to cure than adults. and they are both overall very sharp.

If I had a memory I could tell u how long they were treated but i don't (have a memory.)

My 20 year old daughter is still a little questionable but i feel quite strongly she was congenitial then finally went into remission w/o treatment then came back full force I want to say when she is in second grade. She does well she just gets tired more easily than her peers and at times has jumping pains, and sleeping problems but she is very stong mentally (unlike mom) and she has a normal life. The kids responded soooooooo well to treatment compared to adults in my opinion. So hang in mom i remember being quite beside myself and it all worked out ok (thank God) they did miss some school and they did herx but they responded very welll. Good luck!

Hey alll,

Thank you all so much for the encouragement. I recently started getting worried again after my son started complaining about stomach aches. I asked where the pain was and he pointed to his heart . . . I have been freaking out ever since.

I searched this thread and re-read your responses and they made me feel a lot better. We did all have that nasty stomach bug going around our area a few weeks ago so it could be residuals of that. Still I called Dr. Jones.
