As you know, I am battling lyme for 5+ years.  My husband is currently just out of the hospital suffering from severe anxiety  and a mental breakdown of some sort.  We are awaiting Igenex labwork anyday.  My 12 year old son hasn't felt well for a few weeks but I thought it was just stress from his dad being sick.  Last night, he shows me what appears to be a bullseye rash on his leg.  I am in shock.  I don't know how much more I can take.  He went to school because he graduates in a few days and didn't want to miss so I called the school nurse to look at him.  She does believe it is a fading bullseyes and I should take him and demand antibiotics immediately.  Please say some prayers !

So glad you caught your son's infection early.

You and your family are definitely in my thoughts.

Just got back from pediatrician. He has been diagnosed with lyme. Has a huge bull's eye on his back as well. I am still in shock. They started him on 100 mg. of doxy for 3 weeks. I called my LLMD but she doesn't take children. Don't know where I go from here. How do I know if this is strong enough or if they get it?

Wow Springsjean,

I am so sorry. Please find him an LLMD right away because 100mg a day of Doxy is NOT enough for a new infection. Please read what IILADS has to say about dosaging below.

Dosage:

Increasingly, clinicians recommend that certain drugs used for Lyme disease be given at higher daily doses: for example, 3,000–6,000 mg of amoxicillin, 300–400 mg doxycycline, and 500–600 mg of azithromycin. Some clinicians prescribe antibiotics using blood levels to guide higher doses. Close monitoring of complete blood counts and chemistries are also required with this approach.

I agree that the 100 mg. low dose might not be enough.

Back in the 80's when I got my first Lyme infection-- had the rash-- I was prescribed 200 mgs. per day for a month. .....and that was back in the 80's !

I considered myself 'cured' then. No Lyme symptoms ever appeared and I was fine until re-infection 20+ years later.

you should also get him started on some herbs like teasel, grapefruit seed extract, etc.. just as an extra safety net. Look at it in a positive way. You've been treating it for a while so you know what works the best to be able to help him through it!
