9 cross-reactive for Borrellia
12 specific for Bb
18 unknown
20 cross-reactive for Borrellia
21 unknown
22 specific for Bb, probably really the 23/25 band
23-25 outer surface protein C (OspC), specific for Bb
28 unknown
30 unknown; probably an outer surface protein; common in European and
one California strain
31 outer surface protein A (OspA), specific for Bb
34 outer surface protein B (OspB); specific for Bb
35 specific for Bb
37 specific for Bb
38 cross-reactive for Bb
39 is a major protein of Bb flagellin; specific for Bb
41 flagellin protein of all spirochetes; this is usually the first to appear after a Bb infection and is specific for all Borrellia
45 cross-reactive for all Borellia (sometimes people with Lyme who have
this band positive also have the co-infection Ehrlichiosis)
50 cross-reactive for all Borrellia
55 cross-reactive for all Borrellia
57 cross-reactive for all Borrellia
58 unknown but may be a heat-shock Bb protein
60 cross reactive for all Borrellia
66 cross-reactive for all Borrelia, common in all bacteria
83 specific antigen for the Lyme bacterium, probably a cytoplasmic membrane
93 unknown, probably the same protein in band 83, just migrates differently in some patients


In Dr. Schallers' writings on the Western Blot;

A W.B. is not either positive or negative. If a person has on "fingerprint band", they have Lyme Disease. These highly specific bands, widely accepted in the world literature, are 13, 14, 17, 21, 23, 24, 25, 28, 31, 34, 35, 37, 39, 47, 50, 54, 83, 93, & 94.

We need to update this. I've been trying to find an updated version that explains everything but have not found anything yet. It seems that doctor's now look at band 18 as being positive for Lyme now. I need to find more information though because I don't know if this is alone or combined with another band.

are the bands you describe IgG or IgM?  I don't know the difference.  I was negative on IgG23 but positive on IgM23 for example...and 41....

Here is an explanation of what IGG and IGM mean.

What does IgG or IgM mean?

IgG stands for immune globulin G and IgM stands for immune globulin M.  Both are types of antibodies.  IgM is generally produced the first time a host is exposed to an antigen.  IgM will eventually decline, and then the host produces IgG, which lasts much longer.  Detection of IgM indicates acute or primary infection, IgG indicates past infection or immunity.

If you were positive on IGM, that means you have a current infection. Band 23 is a Lyme specific band. Did you have any other bands positive?

I just had IgM 23 and 41 that were positive (IgG41 too).  They did not test bands 31 or 34.  I was negative on Bartonella antibody and DNA PCR, Babesia, antibody and PCR - done thru LabCorp.  Maybe when I see my new LLMD for the first time later this month, he will do more testing.  Is it possible that some of the co-infections could show as positive later after abx started?  or would those more likely already be positive if the Lyme was positive on IgM?

With the blood testing such as it is (not real accurate), the only way a person can have a positive blood test result is if the infections are active in the blood stream at the time of the blood draw.

I do not think 22-25 are Bb specific..!

24 is a major HIV antigen.. or?

My doc told me yesterday that I had two strains (at least) of Lyme - Band 41 is common to all evidently, but I also had bands 39 and 23 - she said indicators of European and American Lyme...no other details.

All of the lists are way out of date. The most recent, I found recently, was from 2000 or so.

An example: p39 was identified as an outer membrane protein and named BmpA in 1994 and is known since, at least, 2009 to be a laminin binding protein involved in infection. There are four versions of Bmp.

P83-93 and 100 were determined to be the same in 1992. Actually there are several versions which have slightly different molecular weights. I have a list but haven't gotten around to figuring out which strain/species each is associated with.

It's actual function is unknown but there are hints that it is associated with the flagella which are internal and not external as so many believe. And, of course, contrary to what the Dr. C list says, taint the DNA! How absurd!

When I am reasonably confident that I have the facts I shall post an updated list somewhere on the net.

BTW I have never seen an IGeneX positive for 22 or 73 after looking at hundreds of results over the last couple of years.

And p39 is generally considered to be the most specific of all. Second most common after p41. Assuming viral infection does not generate a false positive, of course.

Ok I got the HIV Western Blot..

All negative.. (sadly I did not use the same lab)

I do not know what is happening... ? severely ill too long now..

Tested for all STD´s ... negative

And then suddenly tests IgM for Lyme... even though no risk of tick bite at that time.. (can lyme be resting in the body for a few months before full force attack?)

Can lime cause low cd4, hair loss, thinning of skin, tiredness, more liver spots, headache, sinus infection etc etc...?

I hope the post belongs here, only God knows now!

Yes all of those things you listed can be from a Lyme Infection and/or the other tick-borne infections (tbi's). You just made us wonder if maybe you should post that info in another forum because it was STD testing. LOL! We can get confused easily sometimes too!!!! LOL!

A response to the IgM side of Lyme means that you have a current, "newer" infection. This of course does not rule out a longer standing infection, as the response to that part of the blood test is very unreliable, since it relies on the body's response to the infection. By the time a tbi (tick-borne infection) usually hits the longstanding, chronic infection, the little buggers have the body fooled and it doesn't even recognize that there is something foreign in the body!

The other thing is that you can now get tbi's without having a tick attach! It has been proven that mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas, and even spiders can pass these infections along as well because they are now so prevalent in our world.

Are you seeing a doc? What kind of doc are you seeing, your regular GP? You need to be seen by a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD), as these infections are quite complicated and difficult to rid the body of! If you would like some help in finding a doc, just let me know!!

Thank you so much for all support! I will continue my fight!

I realized that there is a difference with WB Lyme and WB HIV.

Could anyone with lab experience help me to understand?

On WB Lyme, IgM antibodies shows, a recent infection (where I tested positive)

On WB HIV, only tests for IgG (I think)..

If this is true a WB HIV would not be as sensitive in a recent infection, we could almost see WB Lyme as a screening test for HIV if correct bands shows.
