My LLD thinks everybody has babesia as a co-infection and wants to start me on malaria drugs. Both of the drugs he recommended were not cheap and some of the side effects aren't too thrilling to me. I did not get fevers or night sweats. Kinda thinking I should not take this drug but wanted opinions.  Thanks.

Hi Lymester. I tested negative for Babesia. I have been on ABX for 2 1/2 years and my symptoms are much better. I have neuropathy and still off balanced. I feel like I am at a lull though. I am just tired of taking all of these pills and making excuses to not be on malaria drugs.

Did you realize that there are about 100 different species of Babesia in the US? The best labs only test for 3 of the strains (from what I have read) - what if yo have one of the other 97 strains? You won't get a positive from any blood test.

Hi Sassy my LLMD actually had a test done for me that took pictures of my Red Blood cells and you could see the Babesia on some on my red blood cells. I wish I knew exactly what it was called. I recently relapsed and will need to start seeing him again. I will try to remember to ask him about the test...

A good parasite lab should be able to see babesia parasites under the microscope in some of your red blood cells if you have babesia.  It shouldn't matter what strain of babesia it is if you're not testing for antibodies.  Standard treatment is an antibiotic and an anti-protozoan (often Mepron) taken simultaneously.  I used www.parasitetesting.com and submitted a blood test.  They will only send results to a health practitioner.

I tested positive in January, and I used to have bad night sweats last year. I don't have them now, but we started on mepron anyway, assuming that I do have it. I haven't really herxed any worse since starting the mepron 3 weeks ago. I assume that I can have babesia even if I don't have night sweats (which seems to be the side effect most people talk about)? I do have severe arthritis/muscle pain, balance problems, and low blood pressure/poor circulation (amongst other things).

Great info. Thanks everybody. My LLD gave me a prescription for a malaria drug. 8 pills a day. My pharmacist refuses to fill it. So I left a message with my LLD and he has not returned my call. I think he is tired of me questioning him. LOL.

I've heard they don't necessarily show up in the Fry test because the blood drawn is like scooping a gallon of water from the ocean and hoping you find a particular fish in it.

Wonder if that's true?

No- no need to think I wanted you to be ill!! Giggle! I'm glad you got a positive result rather than being like me- not testing positive for any of the Tick-borne infections for a very long time!!!
