Mepron and fatty foods

hello everyone I am about to start taking Mepron for babesia and was told to take it with fatty foods. What foods and how much of it should I take?

I'm not sure that there is an exact amount that you can measure. Some good fatty foods that are at least semi-healthy are:

Olive Oil
Peanut Butter
Eggs
Whole Milk

Thank you for that list. What about almonds? Are they okay? I'm trying to watch what I eat for the Lyme and also to lose a little weight too so I want to eat healthy foods.

Nuts should be OK since they are high in fat. The nice thing about the olive oil is that it helps wash down the mepron out of your mouth. Mepron coats everything like paint. A salad with an olive oil based dressing would be good and healthy too. You can sprinkle some hard boiled egg pieces on it for some fat as well as some healthy protein.

Thanks again. Those seem like good choices. I will be following a high protein diet with supplements and boiled eggs are something I can have. It will work out great! Thanks again.

I think avocado is a good healthy choice.

Avocado's and EPA fish oil (cod liver oil). Doesn't taste good, but it's a good supplement to take anyway and has good fats.

Good luck on the Mepron. Everyone reacts different to drugs. I took it for 2 weeks and was in SEVERE pain and was in a catonic state. I could barley move. My LLMD told me to stop it. So now i am searching out a natural medication to take 4 Babs. I have a few in mind i just have to order it.

Mix it with water, stir it and drink in down with a straw. I remember someone telling me it stained her teeth, so use the straw. The taste is not so bad.

Hi Krissy.  I am sorry you had such a horrible reaction to Mepron.  I have never heard of anyone reacting this way.

Artemisinin is an herb that is often used to treat Babesiosis.  Many Lyme doctors have their patients take high-quality Artemisinin along with other Babesiosis protocols.  You may want to ask your doctor about this.

I have taken Mepron several times and have never had a problem with it staining teeth.  I think using a teaspoon allows you to get the full dose.

I eat alot of almond butter. Pecans are also good. Peanuts are full of mold so I try to avoid them. I also try to take my mepron with a big breakfast....scrambled eggs and such. I try to take it with leftover dinners that I eat for lunch . Goodluck! My LLMD told me to take it with 25 grams of fat. Havn't gained a pound since I am keeping the carbs low while on antibiotics. Lis

Mepron needs to be taken with fatty foods because it increases the absorption of the medication.

This is from Drugs.com under the heading of "How to use Mepron"-
Take Mepron by mouth with food or meals. The medicine may be less effective if it is not taken with food. If possible, include foods with a high fat content (eg, whole milk, cheese, ice cream, eggs, fried foods).

Depending on your other meds, you should avoid milk products. I take mepron with doxy, and doxy doesn't like dairy (the calcium, I think). I stick to nut bitters mostly.

I've never really heard a solid answer to the "how much fat" issue, but my thinking is that I take my meds after breakfast and dinner, so in the AM I need more fats, but presumably my dinner had a fair bit of fat/oil in salad dressing, so I just have one scoop of PB afterwards.

I take Mepron and doxy also.. My dr said just dont have dairy or magnesium products 2 hrs after or before doxy...Sound right???

Hi Shan Rock,

You are correct about the Doxy. Here is a list of fatty foods you can eat when you take mepron:

Olive Oil
Peanut Butter
Eggs
Whole Milk

When I was on Mepron, I would eat a piece of wheat bread with peanut butter on it or I would eat a boiled egg. I hope this helps:) Traveler posted a link on why you should do this.
