Can you have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and perfectly healthy baby if you have an undiagnosed and untreated Lyme infection?

Hi,

I have chronic Lyme Disease. I contracted it in 1994 and was diagnosed in 2000. I have had several treatments of lyme which is why its classified as chronic lymes. I continue to have to get treatments, and this is leading to my response.

I had a beautiful baby girl in 2005. She was a happy and healthy baby despite my being so ill during my pregnancy. I had her tested for lyme disease in 2006 and again in 2009 to confirm. She does not have lyme disease and she is perfectly healthy. Just inform your doctor and take your pregnancy one day at a time.

I have had to be treated several more times since her birth, but they are sure she hasn't and will not be affected by lymes disease.

So although my Lyme Disease was diagnosed I think you'll be fine. And I am here if you need anything.

Well I was only able to find women that were treated while pregnant. I just had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and now have a perfectly healthy 2 month old who I am exclusively breastfeeding. But I have had extremely strange symptoms for 1 1/2 years now and I was wondering if my pregnancy and such kinda rules out the possibility of lymes.

Hey Chrissy -- I guess this confirms that you cannot have a healthy baby and have Lyme if you have an untreated / undiagnosed Lyme infection. Therefore you must not have Lyme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree with that. My daughter is absolutely healthy. I would get tested.

Oh sorry I saw you were the one who just responded. I was not treated at all prior or during my pregnancy. That was my question.

Hi Bornfighting -- correct me if Im wrong but the question is

"Can you have a perfectly healthy pregnancy and perfectly healthy baby if you have an undiagnosed and untreated Lyme infection?" So she is asking if you have an UNDIAGNOSED/UNTREATED infection.

You stated in your original post that you had treatments prior to being pregnant - that would not classify as being completly untreated...

I was originally diagnosed with lyme in 2000, however I contracted it in 1994. I have to go through treatments every 1-2 years. I had a baby in 2005, I was supposed to go through a treatment but couldn't because I was pregnant. I have a beautiful six year old girl who has been tested twice and is absolutely perfect. As I am sure your baby is, :-)

I have had to continue to get treatments. I think you should get tested, it's better to know then to worry. Babies are enough of a worry.

Hi Chrissy,

While they do know that the Lyme bacteria can cross the placenta, there doesn't seem to be evidence that it always does.

My suggestion for you would be to become versed in all the symptoms of Lyme in children and be vigilant for any developing problems.

Are you being treated now?

They were very worried about the health of my baby. I was determined a high risk pregnancy. I had to be on bed rest and be very careful. I was in and out of the doctor and ER several times. I was considered untreated, because I needed a new treatment. But I had a perfectly healthy baby. I never consider myself the exception, so I wanted to share my story. So if I offended NueroGir, I'm sorry. I was simply trying to past on my experience.

I have also been warned if I am going to try to conceive again, I would need to go through a treatment, and would again be considered a high risk pregnancy. My OBGYN for my first pregnancy was directly working with my neurologist who originally diagnosed my lyme at Mass General, and my primary care physician. I was considered untreated, but not undiagnosed. I hope this helps, I have been battling my lyme disease since 1994. I have been in countless studies and treatments.

I wish you the best and hope you do not have this debilitating disease.

Hi! Oh Im not sure why you attached a tone to my email -- I am not offended at all!!!! I was actually just explaining that your response to her question wasn't confirming what she was asking and in fact it was the opposite.  That you had treatments prior to and knew about your Lyme disease prior to having the baby.  Whereas Chrissy is saying she does not have a Lyme diagnosis, has had absolutely no treatments and had a baby and a perfectly healthy baby too ..... So, I think this would confirm that she wouldn't have Lyme disease since we can't seem to find any cases where people with Lyme disease has had perfect pregnancies (and people meaning - someone without a Lyme diagnosis and without any Lyme treatments)

And also during my pregnancy I had no complications... Not even throwing up or anything.
