So after being on doxy for almost 2 months and feeling like I leveled off, my doctor switched me to Cipro 500mg twice daily.

I wondered if there was anyone who could give me some advice/support/info on this drug.

I researched it online and found the 'clinicals' on it, but I need people who actually have experience with this drug and what I may expect from taking it.

My first dose will be tomorrow morning! I'm praying for good things from this one!!

Oh... and I'm still looking for a LLMD in Michigan.

I was given the name of just one in MI and they are not answering their phones. I got the name from the Lyme association website.

Thank you for your input and your experience with Cipro.

I am VERY hesitant about taking my first dose this morning.

If she knows I have incredible amount of pain in my joints and muscles, why would she put me on a drug that could worsen the symptom??

I am very confused and even angry at this point. I don't want to begin a treatment that the only research found has been negative.

All I wondered from this doctor is if the mg of 300 a day could be increased. So then she completely switches me to Cipro???

I guess I'll continue the Doxy for now and keep searching for a LLMD (that doesn't cost over $1,000 (for the first visit), as quoted the other day for one outside of my state)

Not giving up!!

Hi Tammy,

Let's see if I can get to all of your questions.

1. To get some better feedback on LLMD's in MI, you will might have better luck if you start a new thread entitled, "Looking for LLMD in MI (state your nearest big city or region you are willing to travel).

2. Cipro is a favored drug for some stages of Lyme. Frankly, and I hate to say this, at this point most every antibiotic will increase your symptoms in some way or another. But it will pass. I have not been on Cipro for Lyme, but have had trouble with my hands at various points in my treatment (both times!) -- it is in the course of getting well, not a specific fault of the antibiotic. (For healing without the "violence" of these herx reactions you would probably have to move to the natural healing route).

3. When looking for a new LLMD you might want to be aware that the initial visit cost usually includes the $600+ fee for IgeneX testing. Perhaps you have already had that testing and that would reduce your fee.

4. So you aren't seeing an LLMD right now? I think finding one should be your priority. They will be able to get you on the right antibiotic(s) for your symptoms as well as suggesting a good supportive therapy of supplements and lifestyle changes.

Responding accordingly;

1. I'll post a new thread for LLMD's in MI and surrounding areas. Thanks for the tip!

2. I don't 'mind' the herx reactions, I know that something is happening at least. What concerns me is the info that I've read throughout the WWW regarding Cipro and Lyme. The tendon damage that I've read about. Damage that cannot be reversed well after stopping the drug. I know to take alot that I read online with a grain of salt, but I still have to be concerned. Especially when I haven't seen the same kind of stories regarding abx's such as doxy and other names.

3. I have been tested through IgeneX already, back in August when I was diagnosed. Good to know a 'standard' office fee. Unfortunately I'm having to look at filing bankruptcy for all the medical bills accumulated over the past 6 years that I am getting legal action taken against me. Spending $600 on anything right now isn't possible with our finance situation:(

4. I am not seeing a LLMD. I see a doctor who is a DO and treats Lyme. She have alternative treatments available in her office, such as UV treatment that she wants me to get as well as nutrient IV therapy (among others) but she doesn't believe in chronic lyme nor does she think I have late stage lyme (even though I've suffered all my life).

Finding a LLMD is certainly a priority for me. Even if I have to wait a month or two to save up for the visit.

I was on Cipro and Amoxicillin for a year mainly for bartonella, with no problems. Side effects were sore hands and stiff feet, however, I did not have a tendon problem. Actually, I tolerated the Cipro/Amoxicillin combination better than any of the ones I've been on. I don't know if Cipro alone is good for treating lyme, however, my experience has been that every LLMD seems to use different combinations and schedules.....so it's hard to say what's right and what's wrong. Hope this helps.

Thank you both!

I've decided to come up with ways to raise some money for a trip to NY to see a LLMD there.

I'm off the Cipro. I've 'fired' my current 'lyme' doctor (especially when they asked me to "please spell coinfections?") I am still on my sugar/gluten/corn/yeast free diet and starting back up on my cats claw and colloidial silver in the meantime.

I appreciate all the support you all provide! I'll stay in touch and hoping to have good news about setting an appointment in NY!!
