Is this strange for Lyme ?

I twisted my ankle a good 3 weeks ago and thought it was getting better until last few days. Tonight it swelled up and it's so tender and hard to walk on.. I injured this ankle many times In the past.. The reason I bring this up is because I know Lyme attacks the joints and the ankle is a joint right. Has anyone heard or had experience with joint injuries flaring up when herxing or symptom from Lyme??

Hi Shanrock,

Yes, Lyme attacks old injuries, loves scar tissue and slows healing in new injuries.

That being said, it is probably a good idea to get it checked out. You don't need anymore discomfort!

Yes I always had a weak knee and ankle that would give me a problem here and there when I went to exercise class but when I came down with lyme, they were the ones to bother me the most. I would worry about the swelling though and get it checked out cause you may have a hairline fracture since it has been a while. Hope it feels better soon.

about eight years ago I tore my meniscus in my right knee-- on two seperate occasions, rock climbing.

Both times it healed (arthroscopic surgry) and gave me no trouble afterwards-- until Lyme.

I agree that Lyme must love old injuries because I got shooting pains under that knee cap and an MRI showed nothing-- no new tear, etc. So it had to be Lyme. .

The pain went away once I started ABX treatment, but did come back--briefly--when I had a herx or changed meds.

A twisted ankle is actually what ended up sparking my Lyme diagnosis!!

I was already in late stage with neuro and memory problems. But then I twisted (possibly broke) my ankle. I had sprains before and figured I would just tough it out. But 1 month went by and my ankle was still all screwed up. It was swollen, cracking, popping and hurt like hell. I dragged myself to the Doctors expecting X-rays and a cast. But my Doctor was smart enough think outside the box and realize it isn't normal for a 25 year old to have a joint that doesn't heal. He probed into my overall health and when I mentioned fatigue and memory issues, Lyme Disease was the first words out of his mouth. After treatment the ankle healed up and I never ended up needing X-rays or a cast.

Hi Shan rock,

I was on Doxy for about 6 weeks. The dose was low-- 100 mgs. 2 X day. I wasn't seeing an LLMD at the time (mistake!!)

Anyway....I relapsed quite badly when my PCP told me I didn't have Lyme (neg. test result and bla, bla, bla) ......and thus convinced me to stop taking it. (bigger mistake!!)

Long story short, the Doxy just stirred things up and I got even sicker.

A few months later (under care of LLMD) Mepron was prescribed at 750 mgs. 2 x day for 3 months. This was in a combo with Azith and Amox.

Saw good results!!!
