Really!! I couldn't believe it when I saw the link on Facebook! But it really is there! Of course it's admitted to near the end of the article, but it's still there!

"Perhaps most surprising, researchers found the genetic footprint of bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi in his DNA—making the Iceman the earliest known human infected by the bug that causes Lyme disease."

But what about those of us who like to think the US government is responsible for everything, and that Borrelia is a Department of Defense biowarfare bug that escaped?

Did I move to Canada for nothing??? ;)

if Lyme is an ancient disease this would make total sense to me. when i first got sick, i felt like irreversible changes had occurred in my body. like whatever i had would follow me to the grave. if Lyme has been around for 5,000+ years without treatment, is it possible our brains and bodies are now prewired to expect this disease to eventually kill us? i wont pretend to know about genetics and evolution but in my own simple logic this makes sense. this could explain the chronic lingering symptoms after treatment (if you play for that team)... your body doesnt believe the infection is gone hence autoimmune issues and lingering symptoms persist. because up until very recently, your body would have been on its own in a life long battle against a nameless disease with no existing treatments. i believe retraining your body through diet, exercise, and meditation, is almost equally important as the antibiotics we now have in making a full recovery.

To a point I agree with you Mysterylyme! Evidence of Lyme spirochetes have been found during autopsy in the brains of those who have had no symptoms for years! There is no way of proving that a person has truly eradicated the disease from their body...until an autopsy can be done. BUT - we can get to a stage where we have it in complete remission I believe! Unfortunately the uneducated docs have been calling this stage "cured" rather than what it truly is - in remission, so patients don't understand a lot of times. I believe that's why so many can have a relapse -without being re-infected- remission indicates (at least to me) that there are things I need to do to keep things that way. Cured indicates that I don't have to worry about it.

So maybe the Ice Man's healthy lifestyle (lots of walking, no refined sugars or starches), made it so the Borellia never produced symptoms. Or he was actually traveling from Italy to his LLMD in Austria!!!
