Came across a wonderful "open letter" to the families of those who have Lyme.

This letter was written by a Dad who has a daughter that was infected with Lyme Disease. He tells of how he was wrong in the way he was treating his daughters' infections and asks other families that have a family member that has Lyme Disease to not make things harder on them and to learn about the disease so that they can better understand as well.

A good read, and maybe something you can show to a family member that really doesn't understand.

As a mom of a 17 yo with Lyme, I can so relate!! For years and years, we thought that our daughter was just the drama queen. I'll NEVER forget her literally sobbing as she tried to walk down the driveway with me one day. I had told her that I was going to take her cell phone away from her if she didn't go for a short walk with me. She had been complaining about how badly her legs hurt. In order not to lose her phone, she went with me and by the time we were halfway down the drive she was sobbing. That was our "AHA!!" moment. My heart hurts just thinking about how long she suffered before we truly took her seriously.

So glad that now we know and we are 100% behind her!

Thanks Trav. Just so hard to explain how this disease affects you. You actually second guess yourself that you are imaging things. I have said to so many people to listen to their body and not others when it comes to lyme. Nothing is impossible with this disease. Great article!

Glad to see this posting. Not only do I have Lyme, but my 16 year old daughter too. When she began having panic attacks in Feb 2010, I knew something was going on: this was not normal for her. (Treehousemom: I believed my daughter to be a drama queen too! But panic attacks were not in her usual repetoir). I knew this could be some neurological issue related to Lyme, had her tested, and sure enough came back with Lyme and Bartonella. She also had those weird rashes that look like long cat scratches. Doctor told her she must've just been scratching herself without knowing it! Amazing what these doctors come up with sometimes to explain what they have no clue about!!!

Anyway, my younger sister, who's 46, also has Lyme. It helps so much to discuss our problems and issues together. What better support than someone else in the family that has the same disease! When others don't understand, I can always go back to my family for support.

Another site that I really though was a good idea is Lyme Spouse (www.lymespouse.org/about-lymespouse)

It's dedicated to those spouses who live with a spouse who has Lyme. It's their own support site with a forum and info about this disease!

And let's not forget about "The Spoon Theory" - the one site that explains our energy levels and how they determine what we do in a day. It was written by a college student with Lupus, but explains so much about our energy levels as well! We love the spoon analogy!! Use it ALL the time!!! It helps Caity explain to her friends what it is like to have Lyme. And adds a bit of levity to the situation. . .
