A great book to get is The Lyme Diet. It explains what to eat/not eat very well and is not overbearingly restrictive. I ordered it into the library, but it's one of those books that would be good to refer back to. I think they have it in E-book version too. Another one is Recipes for Repair which has tons of recipes meant for Lyme patients. One of my other favorite general Lyme reference books is The Lyme Disease Solution.
I try to eat as healthily as I can without being completely fanatical about
it. I started slow when I changed my diet. I eliminated all sugar, desserts, all fried foods and white flour first. Then I started to cut back on wheat until I pretty much eliminated it. Then I worked on eliminating dairy (except for Kefir).
If you or your daughter are milk lover's like I was and think you may try to eliminate dairy, try almond or coconut milk. They are surprisingly good, and I am a very picky eater.
I still eat a lot of fruit, I eat brown rice, poultry, fish, nuts, vegetables etc. There are bars called Lara Bars which are made out of whole foods. A few of them don't have any added sugar other than what comes from the fruit. I think the okay flavors are chocolate coconut, peanut butter
cookie, apple pie, carrot cake and possibly banana bread. If I really crave a dessert, I'll have one of those. They are made of figs, dates, nuts, raisins etc.
The diet change wasn't too drastic for me. I don't mind eating this way. The only thing I worry about
sometimes is that I'm losing too much weight so I try to make sure that I'm not restricting calories at all.
Good luck with the doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'm also in grad school and I can relate to the amount of stress that Lyme/co-infections creates at home, work, school and socially.
It would be good to find a LLMD that goes by ILADS guidelines rather than IDSA guidelines. There is a big difference in how they will approach treatment.
It was a huge relief for me on my first appointment with a LLMD. I never thought I would be happy to have positive test results for an illness, but at least I was able to find someone who would actually attempt to help.
