anyone taken prednisone for allergic reaction?

more fun for teeners this week! woke up with a blotchy red rash all over my face and arms and upper chest. went to the doc at the university and he said its a reaction to the minocylcine so ive stopped taking that. he offered to give me prednisone to make the rash go away faster, i rejected it bc i heard steroids are bad for us. but if its a short course, would it be better to take it to make the rash go away and stop spreading?

I'm so sorry that this has happened! I do hope that you are able to get on track with your treatment soon!

about the steroids, unless you are facing some very serious health issues, please avoid the steroids. Steroids lower the immune system, so our infections would have the opportunity to spread and infect the body unchecked at all if they are used.

Obviously there are some instances where it would be advisable to use steroids, but generally if a person that has a tick-borne infection can live without them, then they should avoid them. There are a lot of other ways to deal with really itchy rashes that don't involve using steroids.

it also could be a sign of detox..sometimes hard to tell allergic reaction from die off

not all minocyclines are created the same..in fact the site/group www.roadback,org which suggests low dose mino specifically says not to use generics; to get the orginal whatever that is,

i would presume it should not be any more expensive as its off trademark so has to compete with generics

google/try a natural remedy for rashes, like maybe baking soda

more drugs to compensate for the effect of a bad drug is not always a good choice

teeners .... Sorry you have a rash from this medicine...but if you take the prednisone you will be WAY SICKER FASTER than you think..
I was givin predisone and that is what kicked my lyme into high gear.....If it was me I would deal with the rash cuz you will NOT want to
deal with the after affects of the prednisone. Good Luck

My DD10 had an allergic reaction to bactrim - itchy hives all over her body. The doctor gave her Rxed antihistamines for 10 days. The rash started resolving after 2 hours.  Try benedryl or claritin if you can't afford to sleep it off, I don't think that is contraindicated in lyme.

unfortunately i had to go in this morning to urgent care and get an IV of fluids and steroids. the rash was a lot worse and centralized on my face and neck and swollen that they were afraid bc it was spreading and so thick it could cause tightening of the throat and what not. any recommendations of what i should do while on these steroids? to keep the immune system as strong as possible?

I'm sorry you're going through this - as if Lyme weren't bad enough...it seems there are always complications!

It would make sense to avoid anything else that's going to suppress your immune system - especially stress! Make sure to rest and focus all your resources on healing - and if you have a little energy leftover, maybe keep us posted!

Before I knew that I was dealing with Lyme, I was going through a million tests to see what was going on. Since I am allergic to Iodine Dye, I was given Benadryl and Prednisone to take the night before the test. I took literally 1 Prednisone, and woke up in the middle of the night with my very first PVC's. I had never felt anything like it before, but I have been dealing with them since then. I went to the ER, not knowing what they were, and they said it was from the Prednisone.

I thought it was an allergy until I finally saw an LLMD who told me that no one with Lyme should ever have Prednisone. I would imagine it would have to be ok in a life threatening allergic reaction, but I would avoid it if at all possible.
