Pin Prick Itching (tested positive for Lyme)

I am on day 7 of Doxy. Before I tested positive for Lyme, I had intense itching all over my body. It felt like tiny pin pricks. I would feel them on my scalp, face, arms, legs, back...EVERYWHERE. It seemed to have gone away when I started Doxy, but has come back...big time! Is this normal? I feel like I could lose my mind. I tried taking an allergy pill, but it did nothing to help.

Also, should I have been tested for a co-infection as well as Lyme. All the doctor's office said was that I tested positive for Lyme and gave me a 10 day supply of Doxy. I will be calling to get more as I know 10 days is not enough. Thanks for any help I can get!!

Please please please know that 10 days is not enough antibiotic to beat lyme. I would strongly recommend that you find a lyme literate medical doctor. Lyme is an incredibly resistant bacteria. There is great controversy surrounding the proper protocol for testing and treatment of lyme.

Many people have experienced the pin prick pain you described. I would get tested for coinfections and if you find an LLMD they will know who to test through.

Thank you! I plan on calling my doctor first thing Monday morning to request more Doxy. If he doesn't see a need, I will be switching doctors. Does anyone know of a good way to ease the itch? I tried a hot shower, allergy pills, lotion...nothing has worked. It is a very different kind of itch...very intense!!

Have you tried benadryl? I have been told to use only that brand name for lyme relief. ?

I haven't tried benadryl. I have been using an off brand allergy pill. Thank you for that suggestion. I will definitely try it!

Hi Jules,

It is very common -- pretty much expected, actually -- for you to see an increase in symptoms once you start treatment. The bacterial die off releases even more toxins into your system than the bacteria was producing in the first place. Your body is also in hyper emergency mode and actually attacking itself.

The pin pricks you are experiencing are probably not an allergic reaction, but due to neurological irritation. You might want to get a nerve detox formula from the health food store if it continues. The good news is that this kind of symptom does get resolved with treatment.

Now, about treatment ... I hope your doctor will give you additional doxy, but I would strongly suggest you find a Lyme Literate Doctor, one associated with ILADS, the International Lyme and Associated Disease Society. It is really important to get treated at the right dose and for an adequate length of time (beyond the resolution of symptoms).

Hi Jules72,

I was just diagnosed with Lymes through an awesome doctor that deals with the disease. I know he put me on three different antibiotics to be taken 3 to 6 months. The short amount of time your doctor has you on antibiotics does not seem correct.
