Hi,
So my western herbalist was really helpful. He's having good luck treating several people with chronic lyme. He thought my inclination to continue the doxycyclene for six weeks, rather than three, was a good one. He advised that if the infection does not clear at that point (if I am still symptomatic or symptoms resurface) that transitioning to herbs would be good, because it would indicate that the antibiotics were not clearing the infection anyway.
He advised that I could continue for the course of the abx just with the abx, the supplements recommended by some of the LLMD's online, and with the recommended dietary changes and begin herbs afterward if needed OR begin them immediately, if I wanted to. He explained that the anti-biotics make the spirochete cell walls more permeable to immune action, whereas the action of herbs would improve my overall immune action and that specifically, he would give me herbs that would help stimulate immune action in my deeper joint tissues, like my hips where my symptoms surfaced. A few herbs he mentioned that I recall were baptisia and sasparilla, though I'm reluctant to mention them, because what I've learned through herbally treating my hyper-thyroidism is that it is all about
how the herbs are used and combined, not just simply taking them, so it is best done after consultation with a well-trained herbalist. If I started herbs while on ABX, he recommended a less intensive approach than if I were treating just with herbs or for an infection after ABX.
As far as my MD, she was helpful/non-judgemental and offered to extend my abx prescript
ion and refer me to an infectious disease specialist. She also did an EKG. BUT my response from her was really different when I mentioned that I wanted to get pregnant in the next year. Suddenly, she took it all way more seriously, so for what it's worth, it was good I told her that both in terms of ensuring ongoing tracking and in improving my overall care.
Hope this info might be helpful to someone else. Thanks!
