Help needed with Western Blot results (IGeneX).

Greetings,

It's been a long battle, but the results finally came back for the Western Blot. I don't know what the results mean and a little help would sure be appreciated. I think it's Lyme and after treating it with antibiotics for 2 months, it's as though, after 20 years, I actually have a chance at a real life.

Hey Runtz,

Lyme disease is very difficult to diagnos simply with blood work, bacause many times we get a lot of false negatives. When you get an IND - this means that there is a band present, although below the calibration standard. Band 41 is specific for lyme. Many LLmd's find this to be enough to believe you have Lyme. 83 -93 is also specific for Lyme.

Band 58 can cross react with E.coli. It is a heat shock shock protein. "Proteins which are synthesized in eukaryotic organisms and bacteria in response to hyperthermia and other environmental stresses. They increase thermal tolerance and perform functions essential to cell survival under these conditions ."

Lyme Disease is supposed to be a clinical diagnosis, based on your symptoms. What are your symptoms? Do you have an Llmd?

I thank you for your help.

There have been so many symptoms. I'll list the most troublesome.

Dizziness (enough to lose consciousness)
fatigue
headaches
arthritic joints
twitching in the face, neck and arms
reduced sense of smell
loss of concentration
frequent confusion
problems falling and staying asleep
loss of muscle tone
serious loss of weight
intestinal issues accompanied with bloody stools
most recently, temporary blindness in my right eye.

There's a high tolerance for pain. So I didn't have any problems with that.

The blindness really brought everything to attention, but I have no insurance and no doctor. Against better judgment, I'm self treating and most all my symptoms were gone after one month on doxycycline hyclate.

What about band 23. I thought that was lyme specific also and cant cross react. Thanks for any info on this.

Yes, band 23 is also specific for Lyme. And it is the outer surface protein c. Some say that this allows BB to invde an attach the salivary gland. Not everyone agrees it seems. However, it does attach to the tick salivary protein, which helps to protect it in some ways. It gets much more involved than just that, but that is the jist of it...

Your symptoms fit Lyme. Keep in mind that Lyme is a clinical diagnosis.

Actually, band 41 is NOT specific to Lyme. It cross reacts w/any bacteria w/ a tail, such as Strep.

However, I do think 58 is specific and 83-89 definitely is.

You are right Mystery Illness, however, there is a lot of evidence that is suggesting that while it may not be specific, the other illnesses that it could be are easily ruled out or very rare diseases. Igenex considers it specific, and it is usually the first band to become present in a lyme infection. There is actually a post about it in Healing Well that a member put up. She tells it very eloquently.

So, I suppose it depends onwho you are talking to when it comes to lyme... (isn't it always??) lol.

I don;t know... I guess just some food for thought. Maybe one day the doctors on the same page..

I would like to suggest that you read through our "New to Lyme? Start here!" thread that sits at the top of the forum - it's packed full of really important information that you could use!

You also will need to see either a Holistic Doc or a LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) in order to get proper treatment so you can beat this thing. If you don't already have a Holistic doc or a LLMD, we might be able to help you find one. Just let us know!
