blood sugar levels and lyme?

So my daughter had an appt with the llmd this evening, and it seems that her blood sugar level doesn't last as long as it should. He says it can be genetic or due to the lyme. He wants me to ask my ex if their is a family history of blood sugar issues. I haven't spoken to him in years! But anything for my daughter...

Has anyone had blood sugar level issues with lyme, or know anything about it? This is something I have not yet encountered..

Oh yes. Have had hypoglycemic issues for a long time. Adrenal fatigue contributes...maybe causes it?

But my understanding is it should get rectified when the glands get completely back to normal function as my body heals from the lyme treatments.

In fact, I am on the HCG hormone protocol now, which requires you to not eat anything until noon! and I am not crashing :)

This protocol is supposed to re-set the hypothalamus, which regulates the adrenals and thus corrects the hypoglycemia. (this is my simple understanding)

I have not had any blood sugar issues while doing this protocol! Not crashing at all. Hopefully, this will remain after I am done with it.

She isn't having any adrenal symptoms. It seems she gets symptoms of low blood sugar: Confusion
Dizziness,Feeling shaky, Hunger, Headaches, Irritability, Pale skin, Trembling, Weakness, Anxiety,
Poor concentration about every 3 hours if she doesn't eat. That just seems a little soon for that to start happening. I have to go without food all day and still maybe get 1 or 2 of them. And this happened very suddenly, about a 10 days ago. Can she be having adrenal issues without feeling any symptoms? Funny, I only seem to know about severe adrenal issues..lol

Idk much about how or why Lyme causes it, but I can say I def think it's related. When I was pregnant my OB was really surprised when my glucose tests showed that I had Gestational Diabetes. I didn't have to take meds, luckily I was able to control it by diet alone.

However, he was puzzled the whole time. After my son was born (at a very average, normal weight), he even said he was convinced that my test was off, that I didn't actually have gest diabetes. At the time I just thought it was b/c I was so strict about my diet (no sugar during pregnancy = torture, btw!!!), but in hindsight I feel certain it was due to Lyme.

This is definitely Lyme related. I was borderline Diabetic and now I am hypoglycemic. I had to change my eating habits but I have to eat something every few hours or I feel light headed.

I also have blood sugar issues now, I am on the cave man diet. No sugar, no gluten, the first few days were pretty rough without sugar, I had a horrible headache, now I seem to be adjusting to it .

I think it is lyme related too.. Ex husband says there are no sugar issues on his side. It's just so hard to see her doing so well for a while, and suddenly out of nowhere, my daughter has something else that just seems to flare up. I feel like I shouldn't complain because she is doing so much better, but ehh... I am complaining. I hate watching my daughter be sick. I hate her being in pain. I hate that she has to deal with this wicked disease that is taking away the times of her life that she is entitled to... Did I mention I hate this disease???

When I had my labs done, my blood sugar (not fasting either) was 57, which is a little low. Curious.

I too had those symptoms (confusion, dizziness, feeling shaky, hunger, headaches, irritability, pale skin, trembling, weakness, anxiety, poor concentration), but I did/do have adrenal issues as well. I have to be sure to eat 4 or 5 small meals/snacks or it starts back up again within a few days.

There was a couple of times last summer that hubby and I were outside working with our goats, and this started up. Hubby had to bring me some food (peanuts, I think) as I was too weak to even make it back inside.

Does anyne know if sugar levels can be affected by a woman' period? When my daughter has her period, this happens to her.. She needs to eat every 3 hours, but when not on her period, she can go over 6 hours before these symptoms begin...

samjones: yes. Hormones, including adrenal and female hormones can be related to blood sugar issues.

Adrenal fatigue and hypoglycemia often coexist. A good doc knows these relationships. I would find a doc versed in bio-identical hormones and have all her hormones checked, including cortisol (adrenals), thyroid and progesterone, DHEA, etc. When this gets balanced it really helps. I have such a doc who explained the whole relationship in detail to me along time ago and I cannot remember all of it...but I do recall that the hormones and blood sugar are related.

When I said adrenal issues above, I meant adrenal fatigue. I think almost all people with chronic illness have this to some degree as the adrenals become taxed merely by the ongoing stress of dealing with the chronic infections. It can be subtle or not so subtle symptoms.

Hey nan777.. great article. Thankyou. My daughter's bloodwork came in today and she has the MTHFR gene mutation c677t and A1298C. Makes a lot of sense, and I believe now even more she is having adrenal problems, like you suggested. I am going to begin methalation for her, as well as begin some adrenal herbs. She cried a bit today when she found out this is what she had, but we use it to our advantage to help us get better and also take preventative measures.

But I would like to thank-you nan for pushing that article under my nose, which forced me to read it. I would not have put together the adrenal problems if it wasnt for that...

Just wanted to chime in that I also had lots of blood sugar issues related to LD. Sometimes it would happen multiple times a day and I would feel just plain sick when it would happen.
