I am a bit confused. I have the Healing Lyme book by Buhner, it says the core protocol includes andographis paniculata, japanese knotweed, cat's claw, smilax, astrolagus for acute only.

Buhner's site says the core includes , japanese knotweed, cat's claw,, astrolagus for acute only, and Eleuthero.

So....differences.... the book says andographis paniculata & smilax and his site says eleuthero. I don't know which to believe. Does anyone here know how to interpret this?

The Buther site seems to no longer to accept questions and I do no know how to proceed. I am also using antibiotics.

I want to first welcome you to the forum! I really am sorry that you are sick, but I am just as glad that you have found us. We have a very friendly group of people here that will love to help you. We want you to feel at home, and to jump right into participating on this forum.

I would urge you to be sure to read the thread titled "New to Lyme....Start here" at the top of the thread column. It has a lot of good information that is useful for anybody that has this illness.

I read Stephen Buhner's book over 4 years ago. My daughter tried taking the Andrographis but she was allergic to it. If you notice that in the book that it says that a small percentage of people are allergic to it. From reading his website, I noticed that he seemed to change his opinion of Andrographis as being appropriate as part of his core protocol. He eventually changed his core protocol as he received more and more reports of people being allergic to the Andrographis. At any rate, you can regard the information on his website to be an update to his book.

You can still take the Smilax if you desire. The Smilax is used to bind the neurotoxins produced by microbial die-off. The Eleutherococcus is an adrenal gland modulator. It is an adaptagen that serves to normalize adrenal function, thus giving more energy. My daughter used both for a while in addition to the Japanese Knotweed and Boneset. I feel that they are good herbs and many people have found them to be helpful.

Be sure to detox thoroughly as you will have a severe herxheimer reaction from the die-off of the microbes if you don't. I would add the Buhner herbs in slowly one at a time, because you may find out that you will have very unpleasant symptoms otherwise, since you are already on ABX.

Hi Neal,

I am on a modified protocol of Buhners. Like Don said, the nice thing about Buhner is he updates on his website. Some people do really feel that the andrographis is amazing. I have it but I will wait until I'm further in my treatment and healthier to try it.
I will say after a few weeks of the japanese knotweed (I'm using 4.5 grams a day, 3 x 1/2 tsp, not standardized) I definitely noticed less inflammation. Cats claw I didn't really notice a difference on but a lot of people like it. My herbalist doesn't think it will do anything for me but since I already bought it I'm just using it up.

Japanese Knotweed first, and then I believe cats claw and then eleuthro. But Buhner recommends knotweed first for sure.

This is confusing to me too..there's so much out there. My husband takes cat's claw..not Samento though. Is it a good idea for him to be taking Japanese Knotweed too?

Hi Cat - Personally most of my symptoms are neural - brain fog, some muscle twitching, shooting pains etc. (all mild though and almost all of it goes away on abx) Japanese Knotweed is highly indicated for neural issues but keep in mind herbs take a lot longer to be effective usually then when compared with antibiotics. I just started Hawthorne for my heart b/c I have been having some issues there and I read it takes six months to really be effective! I noticed the difference with the japanese knotweed in about 2-3 weeks.

My herbalist actually tested Samento and found out that there is no cats claw actually in it... her and a friend called the company to get the low-down and never got a really good response - just that it was a proprietary combo that included other herbs also.

1stChineseherbs is really affordable. I get the powders (they have a lyme page) and mix them in with smoothies, yogurt etc so they are easy to take. Tinctures are a bit more expensive but can be stronger so I have some for other herbs I am taking. A good site for that is woodlandessence.com and mountainroseherbs.com

I would highly recommend 1-introducing slowly and 2- find an herbalist. They aren't too expensive I went to one and it was 150 for a 1.5 hour consult. Free *simple questions by email and then follow ups are $75.

at first I bought a capsule maker and empty capsules (about $25 for the maker and $15 for... 500 capsules (?). I started with one cap 3x a day then went up adding a cap every few days until I got up to 4 caps 3x a day. I just got tired of making pills so I put it all in a thick juice/smoothie. This dosage is for not-standardized herb powders. Standardized are more potent so the dosage would be different.

No, it is all listed on Buhners website for the dosages. Mine is a little less b/c I'm pint size - he also has it in the book. As far as ramping up - yes that was guessing.

And I have a super accurate scale at work so I measure the gram dosage and 1/2 a tsp = about 1.5 grams for the specific japanese powder.

Also, fyi - the scales that they sell for kitchens that they say work for 1 gm Bullhockey. So far off. glad I had the one at work to use.
