I have copies of a requisition for c-diff, that has no date on it, so that I can go on a regular basis and just fill the date in.  So I was tested yesterday, as I have had bad cramping and a lovely new smell in the bathroom.  I have not heard anything yet.  Does anyone know how long it takes to get results for this test? Do you think that I should stop my antibiotics before I hear the results, or do you think I should continue until I hear if it is positive?  I have emailed my doctor, to hopefully get her opinion, but I have not heard back and I know that I will not get an immediate appointment.  I am a little worried, as I have read about how bad c-diff can be.....

Are you taking probiotics? C-diff also causes prolific diarrhea. Sorry for the pain....no fun! S. Boulardi (mispelled but something like that) is good at preventing it and can treat mild cases.

I would suggest starting with high doses of turmeric/curcumin.

Hi Opugirl - I have been on probiotics 2X's/day for the last year. Unfortunately, I have had diarrhea for many years, and therefore, I can not use that symptom for watching for c-diff. It is just that the smell has changed ( so sorry for having to discuss this topic) and then I started reading about the smell for c-diff. I read that it smells like a carcass that has been in the sun for days - I have no idea what that smells like, but I also read it smells like horse manure/barn......I can relate to that description and this has caused my worry. I will go to the health store and look for S. Boulardi - thanks Opugirl!

I'm not joking about the turmeric:

"Turmeric (active ingredient is curcumin) - 40 U.S. studies are looking at turmeric as a potential inhibitor of C difficile. A turmeric enema may equal vancomycin for C. difficile colitis. Dr. Rattan Patel and his research team found that growth of all strains of C. Difficile was inhibited (in vitro) by extracts of regular grocery store turmeric, at concentrations that would be easily obtained in the colon by adding the spice to food or consuming it in capsule form. Taken orally for therapeutic use, you would need a high quality extract. Dr. Patel maintains that 4 g/day of curcumin achieves a concentration of curcumin in the stool well above the concentrations that inhibited C. difficile growth."

If it makes you feel any better my poo totally smells like it came from a cow. I just attribute it to me eating a lot more fiber/grassy stuff. I don't have gas or diarhea though.

Yay - I just heard that I do NOT have c-diff! I hope that missing a day of antibiotics won't put me back too far. Thanks Opugirl and Bloopy for your replies. I should be proactive and try these things before I do get it!

Hope65, I thought I also had C-Diff but turns out I had become gluten intolerant. I also blame this on Lyme. It has turned my whole body upside down. My cramping and pain stopped and I no longer have mucus in my stool since getting off all gluten.

I had the same scare because of a s**tty gastrodoc. After looking at the main symptoms I decided NOT to waste $1000 on Vancomycin. Then my test results came back negative. Gave me quite a scare though.

Glad to hear it Hope! Antibiotics should stay in your system for 24 hours so 1 day off shouldn't be too bad!
