So, I have been gluten free for almost 3 years now due to an intolerance. I have done pretty well, with a few soy sauce slip ups at the sushi restaurant here and there. I "accidentally" had ice cream with pie crust in it a day ago and ever since have had horrible sinus pain, body aches, and (warning, tmi) diarrhea. I had a painless, small cold prior to this incident.

My question is: is it possible for the gluten to cause such intense symptoms (I can't remember what it used to be like), or is it just a bad lyme flare up?

Well I have been gluten free for almost just 3 weeks and I notice problems if I accidently eat something with gluten! I know now to avoid kamut flour too, been in bed for 2 days since eating that , not only was my gut extremely swollen but my body hurt all over ;-( I think your body heals and adapts to having it gone so any little bit upsets the balance. I have a friend whos gluten intolerant and she will have terrible diahrea if she even has a crumb.

I don't have gluten intolerance, but lots of other allergies/intolerances. Once you're on an eliminating diet and you make a mistake or you cheat, you'll pay for that big time... I've experienced this with all of my allergies/intolerances, no exception...
I get the allergic reactions, my muscles hurt like hell, get diarrhea and it feels as if my immunity instantly goes down.
My sister is severely casein allergic and when she injests the smallest amount of whey or milkpowder (that is in almost all processed food), she suffers for 3 to 4 days

Thank you both for posting! I am now certain that it is my body's reaction to the gluten. i am definitely going to be much more careful in the future.

Absolutely possible. If I get glutened it feels like i have the flu for 3 days with intense sinus and tooth pain. I take gluten digesting enzymes anytime that starts and it it usually helps me back on track in 24ish hours. Anytime I eat something i didn't make from scratch i take the enzymes now.

thanks pathogenkiller, I have had the tooth pain too. crazy how many symptoms gluten can cause. where do you get the gluten digesting enzymes?

Yes, if I am accidently exposed to gluten, I pay for weeks and sometimes months - just for airborne exposure! If I eat the gluten, it is even worse!

Diarrhea, nausea, heavy feeling stomach, etc., for a few days or sometimes weeks or months (longer times are usually from a massive airborne exposure or from ingesting gluten), and any monthly cycles within the following 6 weeks or longer (have had it take up to 6 months to go away) will include severe cramps and migraines.

Avoid Pharmax Glutenzyme - it contains gluten!

Country Life makes an enzyme called Gluten-Zyme that is safe (all Country Life products are gluten free).

I'm only gluten sensitive not intolerant and didn't notice a difference when I became gluten-free.

I've probably had gluten in small amounts and haven't noticed anything.

Once I bought a small pizza on impulse because I really miss wheat so much and waited for something terrible to happen but it didn't.

After my last colonoscopy it showed some minor diverticulosis and that was after being gluten-free for a year. I'm thinking maybe everyone gets it when we get older. That was disappointing though.

I'm too thin and know I'd gain some weight if I could eat wheat.

Is everyone here intolerant rather than sensitive?

I've got a gene for Celiac and a gene for Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.

All gut biopsies & blood tests have been negative for Celiac, but this does not mean I don't have Celiac.

However, I did have positive stool test for anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA and anti-gliadin IgA, which are markers for Celiac. I am also blood test positive for anti-gliadin IgG, which is a marker for non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.

I don't know whether I have Celiac or non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. But a gluten-free trial for 6 months, followed by a gluten challenge convinced me that gluten is poisonous to my body and thus I choose to avoid it.

Razzle, what were your symptoms when you went back on gluten. Mostly digestive?

My LLMD tested me because I was losing muscle tone. I can't say there's a big difference in muscle tone. Have been gluten-free for two years except for the time I ate the pizza about a year ago.

Lately, it's just hard going to a grocery store. I so crave good Italian bread, whole wheat bread, pierogis, pasta that I can cook and still eat the next day (gluten-free tastes good, but the next day dries up if you have leftovers). polish noodles, and much more.

In fact I'm developing an aversion to all gluten-free foods, especially bread.

I know I shouldn't complain because there are those of you here who are truly celiac and can't tolerate it.

I've read that heritage wheat has only a little gluten and on impulse bought some einkorn whole wheat noodles today. I've read that the wheat we eat today is not the wheat our grandparents ate, has more gluten and therefore we've developed sensitives and intolerances.

I'm losing weight and already too thin.

Wish we could just take a pill after eating.

My symptoms after the gluten challenge were:

Diarrhea (hit me immediately after eating the gluten-containing food), nausea, & a heavy feeling in my stomach. These symptoms lasted 2-3 days.

And then, for the next 6 weeks, any monthly cycle I had came with a monster migraine and severe cramps.

about the enzymes for gluten:

They are not intended to protect you from eating pasta, bread, or other foods primarily made from wheat/rye/barley.

The gluten enzymes are intended to help when one is exposed to gluten from cross-contamination (i.e., minute amounts of gluten).
