Black hairy tongue

Okay - I got totally freaked out tonight.......my tongue is black! Not a little bit black, but BLACK!  So I looked on line and it can be a side effect from antibiotics.  Has anyone had this? Does it go away? It looks terrible.......at work tonight, I had to speak with some clients for nearly 2 hours and the whole time I was thinking  - try to talk so they can`t see your tongue..... What can I do to get rid of it, other than go off the antibiotics, which I will not be doing.  I am on Amoxicillin and Minocycline......

Hi hope65,

When I took a short course of Doxy, my teeth turned black and part of my tongue.  You are correct when you said this is caused by antibiotics.   When I stopped the Doxy everything returned back to normal.

I know you don't want to stop taking abx and that's your choice.  But did you ever take the time to think that if abx are doing this to your tongue, what about the rest of your body that you can not see?  Such as your organs, etc.?

Again, this is all about choices.

What exactly is involved with Dr. J's protocol and how expensive does it end up to be? I hear about it all the time but I have not really looked into it thoroughly.

Hope, are you on probiotics? Oddly enough, another board on this forum was just discussing hairy tongue 2 wks ago. It caught my attention so I read through it. You may want to do a search and see if you can find the thread. Someone on there was using some kind of rinse in his mouth and swears it got rid of it.

I have to agree with Deeja on this one. I'm on abx myself right now. But I think I would have to draw the line at a black tongue. It really just means that the bacteria in your digestive tract is off. But really. We suffer enough already.

At any rate, it does go away so don't panic. Good luck!

I had the same thing! freaked me out. Took a short course of abx for a bad UTI.

Nothing to worry about!! You will need to replenish gut flora, as I am sure you know. My tongue went back to normal after getting off the abx.


R.e. Jernigan protocol to do at home: Depends on how much of it you do. Highly recommend getting his book.It outlines the protocol and has a lot of good info on how lyme disease affects the body. Many things you can do at home too, including detox. I have had very good results with the neutraceuticals. I went to Hansa and it has helped me tremendously. still on the products.

I am taking lots of probiotics. I guess I will make an appointment with my lyme doctor and see what she recommends. And I will look for the thread you saw, Shabbychic. Thanks!
