Found Tick in Carpet!

Just found what I believe to be a tick on my carpet in my bedroom. I'm freaking out?! Does this mean someone brought it in?? No pets here, so it can't be them. As someone who's had this disease for 7 years, I'm scared to death.

Yes, it may have been hitching a ride on somebodies clothing and got off at the first stop- your house! Please don't be scared, but DO take appropriate precautions.

We vacuumed the carpet, are in the process of washing the sheets in hot water. I'm not currently taking anything abx wise, so I'm wondering if I should just take some garlic as a precaution? Also, can anyone recommend a good tick repellent spray?

I was given this formula a couple of years ago.

I buy 'Plant Therapy' brand of essential Eucalyptus oil and essential Lemongrass oil from Amazon. That is the brand I was told to buy. Put 20 drops of each essential oil in a spray bottle (I bought one at Walmart) with 4 oz. of water. Shake well before spraying. This is safe for humans and dogs. Those drops people put on their dogs necks are dangerous and cause cancer...per my Vet.
Don't spray this on dogs faces. My husband uses it on his pants socks, shoes etc. when in the yard and we keep our dogs sprayed to repel ticks PLUS we treat our yard 3 times a year with something (from Home depot) my husband puts in the spreader.

Hi everyone
I am terrified of tick bites too. Lyme causes so much emotional trauma. I wanted to mention I dry skin brush twice daily. It gives me comfort to know my skin is being inspected twice daily. I have read that May is the TICKIEST month of the year.

Praying - I have my yard treated too and am still afraid to go in it. The ticks are so small this time of year I could miss one like I obviously did before. I have taken to wearing a lot of light colors now so I can at least have a shot at seeing them on me. Because you cannot feel them! The only reason I ever found one is because I saw blood on my arm, looked more closely, and there was a tiny tick trying to embed itself. That is when my kitties became inside cats!

Do you think this Plant Therapy of essential Eucalyptus oil and essential Lemongrass oil recipe would work for fleas as well?  I have 2 indoor cats (they have never been outside) so I must bring the fleas inside somehow (they can also carry lyme bacteria) and last year it was so bad that I had to hire an exterminator for inside my place and then I brought my cats to the vet where he gave them Frontline Plus (I really dislike using chemicals but it was that bad).

I vacuum every single day, I do laundry constantly to drown the fleas since my cats sleep on my bed, etc., it's a nightmare! 

In fact I was going to call my vet soon to bring my cats in for the frontline before it starts again (they won't let me hold them long enough for me to put the frontline on myself).  I don't want to go through what I did last summer.   smhair

Deejavu.....could try Diatamacoeous Earth inside to kill fleas (carpet, baseboards, etc), even on pets. Have to be very careful not to inhale dust as it's kinda like talc would be...no breathing. I too am paranoid as I've been so sick with lyme. My inside dog LOVE to do his business with his butt hanging in the woods! I just can't keep him from it & we live near lots of woods. I am trying different concoctions of EO sprays on him & us....so far so good. Latest had apple cider vinegar as the base, which I hadn't tried before & whatever EO's I had around (out of lemongrass at the time). I've heard Mercola has a good spray but last summer they were out when I wanted to order it so began experimenting with my own. Said it confuses the tick so they can't sense you, or something like that....you become invisible to them. Also Cistus tea was recommended to me by Enviro doc who treated lyme....drinking 3 cups day. There was a doc who also gave to her dog. You basically are not as attractive to the ticks. Cistus was very hard for the doc to get at that time....came from Europe & was very expensive. I am drinking it, but usually only once a day. Praying we all stay tick free this season!!!

A little of the old fashioned 20 Mule team 'Borax' sprinkled on the carpet and left overnight will kill fleas. Just vacuum it up the next day. Empty vacuum OUTSIDE each time to get any live fleas and eggs out of the house. Use as needed. I don't know if that spray will work on fleas, it's just a natural repellant. I had a friend that gave her cat a bath with Dawn dish detergent and it killed the fleas but she ended up making it an inside cat because the battle is never ending.

Thanks for your advice, I have used DE and I ended up killing my vacuum cleaner, LOL!  I probably put too much down on my carpets..  That DE is a pain to vacuum (I have the Kenmore Canister).

I live in the mountains so I'm surrounded by woods which I love except for the fleas.  For some reason fleas love me (is there something in my blood?).  I go out and I get bit so badly by them.  Not ticks, but fleas (but fleas also carry lyme bacteria) though I'm not worried about getting lyme again (that's another story to why I'm not).  I know I must bring the fleas inside with me but I refuse to be confined inside.  I love hiking, fishing, and all the beautiful things nature offers here in the mountains.

Praying, thanks for the 20 Mule Borax idea, I never heard of that before.  Right now I don't have any fleas but I know it's that time of year where I usually start getting them so I'm getting prepared.  Last year, after I did most everything I could, the Frontline Plus for my cats really did work great even though I hate giving them chemicals.  I think I'll try the Borax first and yes, I always throw away my vacuum bag outside after I'm done vacuuming.

Like you, I'm a strong flea magnet. The bites itch for about 3-4 weeks and they get infected leaving scars for a while. I found that tea tree oil repells them and when I forgot to put it on, I rub some tea tree oil on the bites: it stops the itching and it prevents infection.

I don't have animals at home, but they just bite me on the streets. I think I'm like a giant walking treat to them, yelling 'bite me please!!!!!'.

It smells strong, but I don't care about that...

Deejavu, I'd keep the cat lightly sprayed with the repellant I listed above to try to avoid the fleas this year. Our vet said this year has already started to be bad for fleas and ticks.

I'm like you, a huge Flea Magnet!  Doesn't matter where I go, those fleas find me and love to bite me.  Last year I was constantly spraying the inside of my car in case they jumped on my legs and decided to go for a drive with me.   If reincarnation is really true, maybe I was a Flea in my past life, that would explain my really long legs, duh!  Fleas can really jump so many feet that it just amazes me.  I also read that if one has screens in their windows, fleas can jump through those tiny holes in the screens too.   I guess it depends on what level one lives on (I am ground level).

I have Tea Tree Oil but never thought to use it on my legs.  I also get bit so badly that I draw blood from scratching.  What I did last year was make a pudding out of Living Clay and spread the clay on both my legs.  Very messy as when the clay would dry it would flake off but it did work, stopped the itching and cleared up all those bite marks on my legs.   I like the idea of the Tea Tree Oil better, I don't care how strong it smells.

My cats are terrified of any kind of spray, they run like crazy and go hide!  What I can do is put the solution of the EO's diluted with water in a bowl and take a flea comb (I have many) and comb the solution on my cats.  They love being combed.  Must feel like a back scratch to them!

Well, garlic precautionary measure is not important. Also, its stinks like anything. A dilute mixture of essential oil and boiling soap water would do. I'd read about this in carpet cleaning Denver magazine in which there some characteristic approaches to evacuate dirt. So I think, you should practice this one.

Welcome to our community. You should know that this thread is over a year old.

Do you or someone you know have Lyme or had Lyme disease? You should know that taking precautions to avoid Lyme disease or a reinfection if the person already has Lyme disease is incredibly important.

For anyone that is looking for a precaution to use if they believe they may have Lyme disease, treatment -whether herbal, antibiotics or both- are very effective right after a possible infection. The longer a person waits, the more likely they could develop chronic Lyme disease.
