What were your first lyme symptoms that sent you to the Dr?

Thought it would be interesting to hear from people - what were the first symptoms that appeared for you, where you felt "this is not right" - that sent you to your Dr.'s office?

I had a sudden onset of migrating pains affecting nearly all of my joints,hands,knees,shoulders.........

That coupled with a very low body temperature and a general feeling of fatigue,set the alarm bells ringing.

And of course, the tick which had been attatched to my left shoulder blade,but needless to say the first test came back negative and I was told it was arthritis.

I think my story is fairly typical. shakehead

Fatigue and leg (ankles, knees and hips) pain.

My doctor kept giving me vitamin B shots.....

After years of escalating symptoms, it was my finally my wife's doctor (after my wife telling her doctor about all of MY symptoms) that gave us the name of my LLMD.

The whole ordeal is bordering on surreal.

Dizziness and dehabilitating fatigue. I told the first (and all of the 10+) doctors after that I had been bit by a tick. But "there's no lyme disease around here"!! They say... wake up WA state, you are in for a very unpleasant surprise! I'm telling everyone, be careful!

Just glad I found this site, you really do have to be your own physician!

My husband, Toby, had a problem with this right thumb. He couldn't bend it well. That started in Oct. 2010. Then he started having arm problems in the spring of 2011 after getting B12 injections at work. This brings me to ask Joe a question. Did you start getting symptoms right after receiving the B12 shots? Do you think that maybe the injections, not necessarily the B12 itself, but the "trauma" of the injections could have triggered the Lyme? You are the first person I have found, aside from my husband, to say you were getting the shots and then found out you have Lyme. I find this interesting. What do you think?

My symptoms definitely started before the shots. Of course, the shots did absolutely nothing for any of my symptoms.

I overlooked the initial Flu like symptoms but almost a year later my knee got sore and swollen to the point I almost needed a crutch to walk. I scheduled a visit with my PCP to get a referral for an Orthopedic Specialist but he was wise enough to order a Lyme test and he nailed it.

Mine was a sudden onset of systemic, severe symptoms after delivering my daughter.
Severe Fatigue
Nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching
Muscle pain
24-7 visual snow
tinnitus
tingling and numbness
muscle twitching
"brain zaps"
vibration sensation down my spine
Lightheadedness
Cognitive problems
Burning in soles of feet
Insomnia
Anxiety
And many more...

So, there was no doubting that something was VERY wrong, although I still had drs. say it was "psychosomatic" illness.

Oh my gosh! Mystery Illness I got 1/2 of your symptoms, visual snow and all that good stuff, brain buzzing, and more head/brain stuff, 1 year ( 2010), before I got the other 1/2 of them.

Unreal. And then when I got the body hits, joint stuff, muscle twitching, vibes thru body, cog problems, day and night sweats, CFS, they ALL showed up July of 2011. All in 8 weeks, July and Aug of 2011.

I was told it was psychosomatic too. By.............gosh, GP, and specialists between 2 borders.

Even with a low grade fever and 15 pound weight loss in the 8 weeks I was told psychosomatic and by that time I was stuttering with severe encephalitis. The other stuff minus anxiety I slowly got 1 year before. What a nightmare.

I had only hits of broken sleep and knee problems I thought was my running starting around 2002.

extreme fatigue, joint pains and erythema nodosum - over the 18 years of having problems, this list grew to be a very very long one...

Constant headache that didnt respond to advil. the day was october 17th 2010. i still have a headache but i have made improvement in the last 3 weeks after starting babesia treatment. i have lots of other symptoms, but the headache turned to migraine and has been a nightmare.

My very first Lyme symptom was wandering leg pains, but it was blown off by family and chiropractors as growing pains or sciatica, and that was that.

Nausea so severe I couldn't eat anything is what sent me to the doctor. They had no clue what was wrong with me. A Homeopathic physician helped me then (I was a teenager).

My right knee had exploded to the size of a watermelon. Luckily a smart ER doc suspected Lyme.

I should have realized something was wrong long before this though. I had severe anger issues, memory, sleep problems with odd diseases from a suppressed immune symptom (meningitis, pertussis, etc).

I had a seizure that lasted 5 hours. It was a very sudden onset of:
- Extreme weakness where it was difficult to lift my hand, let alone an arm or head.
- Extreme tingling that 'moved' throughout my body, limbs and face.
- Focal staring (everything was 'frozen' when this would occur. In the extreme, I was able to hear and comprehend, but unable to speak or move in response. I would wait for the spell to pass and then respond to the questions asked of me a minute ago.)
- Great difficulty speaking. Almost as if I was trying to be a ventriloquist -- trying to talk without lips or jaw moving.
- Racing heart.
- Nausea
- Facial numbness
- One hand that went physically 'cold' while the other was normal. (Both were bundled under a blanket when this happened.)

I was at work at the time and ended up going to the hospital by ambulance. When I was discharged many hours later, the doctor said "I am going to write 'anxiety symptoms' on your chart, even though it is obvious you are not having an anxiety attack. When someone presents with these kinds of symptoms and we don't know what is causing it, this is what we put on the chart. Follow up with your family doctor tomorrow."

I was at ER 3 times in 5 days that week. But, the same old story followed, the same as everyone else here. All tests came back negative and they sent me to see a psychiatrist.

I had a bulls eye rash but the Dr. thought it might be spider bite.

I had extreme fatigue.

I was having to go in and get IV's at the Dr. for my headaches and my husband would have to help me out of the car at home because that stuff knocked me out. They thought it was migraines.

My joints all hurt to the point it hurt to move and the bottom of feet felt like I had marbles under my skin on the soles of my feet. It really hurt to walk. I fell down the stairs a few times in the mornings.

Thank you all for sharing your stories, some very familiar symptoms as I read through the posts. I too pray for a cure for this disease

My 7 yo daughter said she was tired. And she kept on saying it. 7 year olds are never tired and even if they are tired, they vehemently protest that they are tired until they go to sleep. After a couple of weeks she couldn't pick up her baby brother any more. She picked him up all the time and carried him all over the house to play, look out the window, switch light switches on and off, etc. At that point I felt it was either mono or Lyme. The only thing that pointed me to Lyme was a suspicious tick bite (never turned into the bull's eye rash). We took a picture of it just in case. I am glad we did, it gave me confidence in seeking a Lyme test and in researching on the internet and I found this forum and some great websites.

My daughter also complained of headaches and of feeling yucky for just a minute after she eats. But that was after we already knew it was time to call the doctor.

The pediatrician would never have ordered the Lyme test if I hadn't asked for it. So I'm glad I did enough research to know to look for Lyme.

I am so sorry that your 7 year old is going through this mommaklee. I am glad you took the initiative to do your own research. No child should have to suffer from Lyme. Joe, thanks for the reply. One of Toby's symptoms started before the injections, but he really started going downhill after receiving them. We are wondering if getting them caused more problems.
